Too Many Sunday Dinners: Family and Diet

Overview

Did you know that all around the world, more people are overweight than ever before in the Earth's history? This is partly because of the way we eat, partly because of the way we live, and it's also partly because of the types of bodies our parents passed on to us.

A long time ago, children and grownups were active every day, just doing all the jobs that needed to be done to stay alive. Food was sometimes scarce, and so people who could store fat were more likely to stay alive. ...

A long time ago, children and grownups were active every day, just doing all the jobs that needed to be done to stay alive. Food was sometimes scarce, and so people who could store fat were more likely to stay alive. Today, though, grownups and children don't move around nearly as much as they once did. Food is almost always plentiful. And our bodies' ability to store weight now means that we easily become overweight. It's a complicated problem!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Robertson Mason
The issue of obesity is one that weighs heavily on the minds of many Americans. We know overeating and poor diet choices leads to obesity, but are there other causes as well? According to this book, one of the "Kids & Obesity" series, genetics can also be a factor in your weight. One of the good points about this text is the explanation of genetics and how it relates to obesity. This is a tough topic for kids, but the author successfully breaks down the ideas into understandable chunks. This is also true of the description of the effects of obesity as a whole. An index and list of resources, both print and online, are included at the end. However, despite a title that hints at family eating habits, the topic is barely touched on with just a few paragraphs at the end of one chapter. Much of the first chapter, although informative, is taken from other books in the series word for word. Some of the side bar information, indicated by either a heart or (interestingly enough for a book on obesity) by a burger, is also copied from other books and are repeated more than once in this particular book. It is an important and relevant topic, but this book was lazily done. There must be better books out there on this topic. Reviewer: Heather Robertson Mason
