Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Uma Krishnaswami
When the new baby with "an awfully squashed nose" arrives to usurp Little Fox's cradle, Daddy invites Little Fox to come and see. From there the conflict escalates swiftly. Stung by the unfairness of life, Little Fox builds a castle and knocks it to the ground, splashes mud on washing hung out to dry, thinks Very Bad Things, and even composes and sings a Very Bad Song. In the throes of deepest resentment that child readers will be sure to recognize and identify with, he goes off to hide. The darkness of the cupboard under the stairs, the sound of humming, and a warm spicy smell from the kitchen, all combine to lure him out. Daddy has baked the honey cake of the title. Slowly but certainly, all is mended in this charming world. The book closes with a comforting scene--Little Fox and Daddy bonding, and the baby thankfully asleep. It turns out that in the UK edition from Orchard Books there is apparently a Mummy in the picture. The American edition features an all-male household, doing quite nicely without her! The puzzle of its transatlantic transformation aside, this book is bright and cheerful, featuring warm paintings in orange and peach hues, and simple, child-centered text. Little Fox's changing mood is aptly conveyed by the shifting shadows in Braun's whimsical pictures.
School Library Journal
PreS-K-In this charming story, a young fox is distraught over the arrival of a new baby and the seeming cessation of his father's love and attention. Braun's lovely, richly colored illustrations show Little Fox earnestly performing naughty and nice tricks in an attempt to gain back his premier status in the household. His "Very Bad Song" should delight any preschooler who has encountered an odiferous baby. Of course, the story ends with a comforting reassurance that Little Fox will be loved "forever and ever" by his daddy, and they share honey cake in front of the fire. This is a warm and funny addition to a crowded genre. It is notable for its focus on the father-son relationship and the cleverness of Little Fox as he clamors for attention.-Tamara E. Richman, Somerset County Library System, Bridgewater, NJ Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Little Fox grows increasingly resentful of the attention that Daddy Fox lavishes upon the new baby. Fed up, he hides under the stairs and creates a song to express his feelings about this new sibling: "Baby Fox is a stinky-pooh. / Put him in a box, / and send him to the zoo!" After his anger is spent, Little Fox begins to cry. Just then, Daddy Fox pokes his head in to offer Little Fox some honey cake. Placated enough to be generous, Little Fox tells his father that Baby Fox, who is "much too small for honey cake" now, can have a bite of his when he's bigger. Braun's illustrations, in their warmth and simplicity, possess a folk-art quality that merges with Lobel's deliberate phrasing to create an endearing story capable of reassuring even the most anxious of children that, while it is normal to feel jealous and angry when a new person enters the family, they will always hold their own special places in their parents' hearts.
