The Barnes & Noble Review
Young readers can learn a lot about friendship from Toot and Puddle, two delightfully different pig pals who've starred in Holly Hobbie's Toot & Puddle, Toot & Puddle: A Present for Toot, Toot & Puddle: You Are My Sunshine, and Toot & Puddle: Puddle's ABC. Now, these beloved best friends are back in a warm and whimsical Christmas tale that celebrates the spirit of the holiday.

Toot is away in Scotland for a family reunion -- where Great-Great-Aunt Peg gives him a lucky nut to hold on to. But luck isn't on his side when his flight home is delayed...and he's in danger of missing Christmas. In the meantime, Puddle frantically prepares for the holiday -- baking Toot's favorite fruitcake, making paper chains, and decorating the tree. But as he and Tulip stare out into the snowstorm on Christmas Eve, the spirit of the holiday is lost on him, without his dear friend Toot by his side.

Toot, having landed in Boston in the midst of the storm, has no way to get back to Woodcock Pocket. He trudges through the snow, clutching his lucky nut, wishing he was home. Then, amid the cold and darkness, Toot is picked up by a mysterious stranger in a twinkling sleigh, who makes his wish come true. Toot and Puddle are joyously reunited and go to sleep, anxiously awaiting morning -- and Christmas.

Holly Hobbie's evocative watercolor illustrations and delightful details -- including shiny Christmas ornaments on the cover -- highlight this magical story. A wide range of expressions and emotions are captured with wit and charm, and the appealing piggies will once again win reader's hearts. Toot & Puddle: I'll Be Home for Christmas celebrates the joys of travel and adventure...as well as the pleasure of coming home again. And most of all, this gentle, heartwarming book celebrates the special bond of friendship -- and the devotion and faithfulness that exists between best friends. (Jamie Levine)

Publishers Weekly
Come canceled flights or high snowdrifts, piglet pals Toot & Puddle will be together for Christmas in Hobbie's latest series charmer. Globe-trotting Toot, who has been in Scotland for a family reunion (and who has a tam and tartan kilt to show for it), promises homebody Puddle that he'll make it back to Woodcock Pocket for Christmas. But severe winter weather nearly derails that plan. Luckily, a magical heirloom and a certain red-suited sleigh driver help Toot along. Hobbie's chipper text and alternately cozy and funny watercolors are as winning as ever. Ages 4-8. (Oct.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
It is Christmas time, and two little pigs, Toot and Puddle, anticipate their reunion for the holiday. Puddle lives in Woodcock Pocket and eagerly awaits the arrival of his best friend Toot. While Puddle rushes around preparing for what promises to be a great Christmas, Toot is doing some running around of his own. He spends some quality time with his Great-Great-Aunt Peg, who gives him a special gift—her lucky nut—and then leaves for Woodcock Pocket. An unexpected snowstorm in Boston, however, threatens to ruin the plans for the holiday. Everything is halted including trains, buses, and taxicabs. While he sits hopelessly in the snow, Toot remembers the lucky nut from Aunt Peg. He holds the nut and wishes to be with Puddle. Suddenly, a sleigh descends from the sky and its driver offers him a ride. Toot climbs aboard and is reunited with Puddle in no time. As the two fall asleep waiting for Christmas morning, they can't help but wonder at the identity of the mysterious sleigh driver. Holly Hobbie's illustrations provide us with a more thorough understanding of the scenery and what the characters look like. Her writing style is quite straight forward, but her illustrations are very detailed. Her watercolor illustrations are almost impressionistic. This book would be great to read to a first or second grade class around Christmas time. It encourages children never to lose hope. 2001, Little Brown and Company, Ages 5 to 7.

PreS-Gr 2-Another charmer about the anthropomorphized piggies. The peripatetic Toot is trying to return home for Christmas after a family reunion in Scotland. Back in Woodcock Pocket, Puddle delves into the holiday preparations in anticipation of his pal's return. He decorates, signs the cards with his name (leaving a blank for Toot to sign), sets the Christmas Eve dinner table-and waits. Meanwhile, Toot is delayed due to inclement weather, and when he wearily gives up, sitting in a snowbank in the woods, he wishes on the lucky nut Great-Great-Aunt Peg gave to him. He is picked up by a mysterious stranger in a sleigh and dropped off close to home. The drama of two friends trying to be reunited holds strong appeal. The whimsical watercolor illustrations and effective formatting are so attractive that children and caregivers will enjoy snuggling together to share this book.-L. F. Toot & Puddle's correspondence and preparations for Christmas make a charming story, and the read to me option is great - kindergartener loves it! Hope to see more seasonal stories with 'read to me' option.

Toot and Puddle are the best of friends and their lively adventures continue in this book by Holly Hobbie. These books appeal to girls and boys alike as both of my children fell in love with these characters. My daughter carried Puddle to kindergarten with her everyday. They are so lovable and I enjoy the Scotland adventure verrry much.
