Overview

This book will present many of the expected changes caused by normal aging and the Top Ten Geriatric Syndromes elders experience. These syndromes are a cascade of problems in an elder's health and revolve around vision and hearing problems, elimination issues, dizziness, falls, and cognitive impairment including delirium as well as dementia (such as Alzheimer's disease). For these reasons, providing healthcare for older individuals with Geriatric Syndromes can be complicated due to elders' multiple conditions or diagnoses i.e. (hypertension and diabetes and arthritis) and multiple medication usage by many in this age group.

In addition to providing a guide to care that is concise and in an easy to utilize format of treatment strategies; the author discusses the differing presentations of illnesses in elders and encourages the utilization of strategies which are age-appropriate.

Topics include: Falls, Sleep , Pain, Eating problems, Confusion (dementia/depression) , Incontinence, Anxiety, Living abilities (Activities of Daily Living-ADLs), Skin Integrity Issues and Elimination Issues.

Introduction

Aging does take a toll on a person's body and there are certain physiological changes that occur in all individuals as time goes by. Aging is something we cannot avoid, though many try to halt the aging process or at least slow it down, it is impossible to stop. Aging is universal; everyone ages, but we all age a bit differently. Aging is not a 'disease,' it is an accumulation of the changes that occur in an individual over time. It is a series of biological, psychological, and spiritual changes that occur in a person as time marches on.

There were 32 million individuals over the age of 65 in the United States in 2010 and this population is expected to quadruple by the year 2050 as the baby boomers gray. Our older population is healthier than in previous years and they are living longer than generations before them. And both the people who are aging and healthcare professionals must be prepared to manage the issues that arise by understanding the effects of aging, the common problems, and ways to enhance health as well as prevent problems (or at least lessen their impact). This book will present common occurrences in older adults as the aging process advances, including expected changes in vision, hearing, skin, digestion and weight, cardiovascular system, urinary system, cognition, and changes affecting sexuality. There are common problems many older individuals experience due to changes caused by normal aging - commonly referred to as geriatric syndromes.
