Overview

For a kid who balks at bedtime, switching roles is great fun — for a while — in a delightfully droll tale that will resonate with readers big and small.

Arathusela does not like to go to bed. But one night she has an idea. "Why don’t you let me put YOU to sleep for a change?" she says. "Fine," says her father. "Marvelous," says her mother. But after her parents beg to stay up for just a few more minutes, argue about the book they will hear, and ask for just one more good-night kiss, Arathusela gets the feeling that this job might not be as easy as she thinks. Joan Levine’s witty, spot-on story and Tony Auth’s humorous illustrations make for an utterly spirited story sure to be a favorite at bedtime — and any time.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Julie Lodermeier
Ararthusela really does not want to go to bed. Night after night, her parents labor over putting her to bed. When they mention they wish they could go to bed, Ararthusela suggests she put them to bed. The parents have many wants and needs to stall bedtime just like Ararthusela usually does. She finds out how tricky it can be to negotiate a bed time. They complain and protest as they ask for one more glass of orange juice. She realizes staying up late is not all she thought it would be and ends up snuggled in bed with her parents. Levine tells a charming story while Auth's pastel illustrations depict the sleepy mood of the bedtime story. It is fun to watch tiny Ararthusela boss around her towering set of parents.
