Barnes & Noble - Benjamin Ivry
This soundtrack for Mike Leigh's acclaimed film about W. S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan was a labor of love by composer and conductor Carl Davis. Unlike previous recordings, these G & S gems are performed by actors as in the original productions, not by professional singers. This provides at least one pleasant surprise in the charmingly girlish soprano of Shirley Henderson, hitherto best known for her role in the movie "Trainspotting." While Davis's unusually slow tempos may test some actors' breath control, they match the unsophisticated but dramatically true singing in Ingmar Bergman's film of Mozart's "Magic Flute." Rarely has Sullivan's song "The Lost ...

Rarely has Sullivan's song "The Lost Chord" sounded as movingly urgent as it does here, performed by Eleanor David. TOPSY-TURVY touches the heart behind the jolly, ever-popular Savoy comic operas.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
The soundtrack to Topsy Turvy, Mike Leigh's Academy Award-winning film about Gilbert & Sullivan's turbulent creative partnership, features excerpts of some of the duo's most popular operettas, including The Sorcerer, Princess Ida and The Mikado. "If You Give Me Your Attention" from Princess Ida, "Incantation" and "But Soft.../Why, Where Be Oi?" from The Sorcerer and "Behold! The Lord High Executioner," "Three Little Maids From School Are We" and "A Wand'ring Minstrel I" from The Mikado are some of the highlights of this album, which also includes excerpts of Carl Davis' score, which was inspired by Arthur Sullivan's music for The Mikado. Like the movie itself, Topsy Turvy's score reflects equal amounts of affection and attention to detail, making it as good an introduction to Gilbert & Sullivan as it is a companion to the film.

    A GRAND CELEBRATION!

'Topsy-Turvy' is a great musical CD for everyone, including me. It highlights the grand celebration of Gilbert and Sullivan, who were masters of operettas. The musical tracks on the CD were hilarious and just perfect for easy listening if you've had a hectic day at work or some other place. I recommend this soundtrack to everybody who likes operas. I also think it should be a hit at my next year's Valentine's Day Dance at the Forum School in February 2001.
