This book is great. I love the look of enameling and have wanted to try this for a long time, but didn't know where to begin. (Besides being afraid to light my torch. LOL But Barbara Lewis has written a book that would cause even the most timid beginner (me) to just itch to get my torch out, light it and start enameling all my copper pieces. It starts at the very beginning telling us how she got interested and started and adds to that some tips about how to start. Then she goes right in to enamels and their types, color and how to use the flame for different effects. She then sets out a very simple, easy to understand set-up for the enameling. She outlines the tools you'll need and even has a great chart that helps the reader understand sizes of drill bits, so you know exactly what size you need for what wire gauge. After that you get to jump right in see how to enamel, how to do it safely, some tips and troubleshooting. There's also tips on Etching copper sheet (something else I want to try), terms you'll need to know and some basics like how to make ear wires, simple loops and clasps. Then comes the REALLY exciting part! All the projects. From the beginning to the end I was hooked. I can so see myself making that Beady Bangle with the fiber and enameled beads (although I'm nervous about one torch, not sure how I'll handle two But she makes it sound so easy and fun, you just can't help thinking "I can do this!" Her use of color is outstanding and her ideas/tips are great. Plus she has a ning group and blog (which is where I first heard about her and her enameling) that are both there with loads of tips and help. All in all, this book is wonderful for the beginner like me (waiting for my kit, now) but is interesting for advanced jewelry artists/enameling. You'll love it. I did. I've since gotten my torch kit and fired my first beads. It was sooo fun. Can't wait to make some of the projects now.

...was a copy of Barbara Lewis's Painting with Fire book - so I bought it! I allowed myself an early Christmas present and opened the book as soon as I got it. I'm glad I purchased the book before buying any supplies. Barbara's straight forward, relaxed, enthusiastic approach is great. The pictures are gorgeous and help tell the story of how to torch-fire enamel jewelry beautifully. I now feel confident that I can try this new adventure, not spend too much money and be successful. I did feel there was one downside - I would have liked a section with a beginners guide to enamel colors. Some pictures showing what various colors look like with 1, 2 or 3 coats of opaque color, maybe a layer of a different transparent color, a list of the 'must have' basics and what they would look like. That being said, I hope Barbara considers a "recipe" book next as a companion guide to Torch-Fired Enamel Jewelry, A Workshop in Painting with Fire! Now - what I REALLY want for Christmas are enamels, beads, mandrels, a bead pulling station...

This book has opened a whole new world of enameling for me. I cannot get to a kiln to work very often, and sometimes I really need an enameling fix. This technique and the books instructions have given me a wonderful, creative way to get my enameling fix! Buy it today and do as I have done, keep it by your reading chair, unless you are in the studio with it!

Hot is the only way to describe Barbara Lewis' book on torch firing enamels. Put away your kilns and turn the pages of this extremely informative book on the immersion technique of enameling. There are steps from basic color combinations to "just what to do with cat whiskers". The pictures are beautiful and the instructions are concise easy to follow for us who have formerly been afraid to pick up a torch. After reading , you'll want to run out for supplies and begin firing beautiful beads and pendants.
