Torment Summary
How many lives do you need to live before you find someone worth dying for? In the aftermath of what happened at Sword & Cross, Luce has been hidden away by her cursed angelic boyfriend, Daniel, in a new school filled with Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and humans. Daniel promises she will be safe here, protected from those who would kill her. At the school Luce discovers what the Shadows that have followed her all her life mean - and how to manipulate them to see into her other lives. Yet the more Luce learns about herself, the more she realizes that the past is her only key to unlocking her future...and that Daniel hasn't told her everything. What if his version of the past isn't actually the way things happened...what if Luce was really meant to be with someone else? This is the real summary for Torment that i happened to find when i was looking for spoilers of Torment, and by the looks of it, this book is going to be amazing!

I was very dissapointed in this second installment. I felt as other ratings have mentioned that Luce's character changed too much from the first book and was cheapened. I can't understand either that Luce had no patience waiting for Daniel and had to be getting into something every 5 minutes, she was down right mean to him. I felt while reading Fallen that Luce's character was portrayed as a old teen, much more mature and grown up, while Torment took years off of Luce's age to give me more of a tween feel for her. Very immature and some what annoying to read about. Don't get me wrong though I will be holding my breath for Passion, but I just beg the author for Luce to come back around to her original self.

I very much like the first book, Fallen. Torment, left me very disappointed esp. with Luce. Luce's character became very immature, self-absorbed and most of all impatient. She can't even stay put for a very short time (I MEAN A VERY SHORT TIME) while Daniel has to wait every 17 years to meet her!!!!! Fallen described L & D relationship as something almost sacred but I feel in Torment, Luce kind of cheapen those feelings. I feel all she does is doubt everything.... what happen to having "faith" with someone you love. She seems to trust her new friends who she only knew a couple of days/weeks over someone she claimed she loved in all her reincarnated lives. I don't know what Daniel is still hiding but I sensed that all he intended is too keep her safe, plus the-too-much-knowledge-will-kill-her business. Don't even start me with her feelings with Miles! At this point, maybe Daniel should have chosen someone who's a little more worthy after he'd sacrificed so much. I will read Passion and see if that can fix the betrayed feeling I got from Luce in Torment.

This book picks up pretty much right where Fallen left off. Lucinda (Luce) is sent to a new school, to make new friends and face new challenges. She is lying to her best friend, and her family, and she has no idea what is going on. Daniel is being cryptic about everything that is going on and is just not there whenever Luce needs him. Luce knows that everyone (Daniel, Cam, even her teachers) tell her to stay at school and to lay low is for her own good, Luce still can't help but do a little investigating of her own to try and figure out what the big mystery really is. This sets her off on an exploration of her past lives, and on a path to discover who Daniel really is.
I am stuck. That is for certain. I must know what happens! The thing is, this book actually annoyed me a lot. To me Luce whined a lot, even if a lot of it was justifiable. She didn't ask enough questions. I mean Steven (super hot demon-angel teacher at the new school) - hello, he was helping you, why not ask him more questions? He may not have answered, but he seemed willing enough to help. Why in the world can't she follow directions? I mean, after the first 'holy crap, I just about got myself killed' moment, you could think she would learn.but nnooooo. Daniel was a big jerk because he just wouldn't talk. Even if he couldn't tell her everything, he could have at least told her some things - like, "oh yeah, there are people out to get you" or "hey, this school we just stuck you in to fend for yourself - it's a shield. It will protect you!" That is the least he could have done. The shadows/announcers/portals. Honestly!? Can we pick ONE THING that they are. I can say much more on this topic - but it would give way too much away, but I did think that they were SO 'useful' in this book, it made them even more unbelievable - even for a fantasy novel.
So why does every book have to have a love triangle now? That is one plot I could live without. And this is the SECOND one for this series.I really hope a 3rd isn't going to show up. I will say that I really liked Miles. His character was my favorite out of all of them in this book. I want to see good things for him in the future! The Twilight reference in the book "Team Daniel/Team Miles" was funny, and probably a little cheesy. I laughed, because I'm pretty easy going and okay with whatever in books, but I'm betting a whole lot of people rolled their eyes, slapped their head, groaned, etc.
What I'd like to see in the future? A little more maturity. I mean, if this is a "love of your life" type deal, GROW UP! Both parties! Relationships are based on communication and trust. I'm serious. More Steven. I'm okay with Francesca also, but I like Steven! Less running across time. More answers.like, what the heck, IS Luce human or no? What would have happened if the rebels had taken her? Stop beating around the bush, this isn't LOST.
One last thing... I was listening to my IPod and this song came on, it seemed perfect for Daniel and Luce's relationship in this book. Maroon 5's How. It's on their new Hands all Over CD (highly recommended btw!)

I didn't HATE this book I just really really really disliked it. Luce was a horrible character. Always complaining and always getting herself into trouble when thinking that she DESERVED to know everything. She was idiotic and made the whole book well...a torment for me to read. Cam's sinister qualities were taken away in this book which made it even more boring and Daniel, well Daniel stayed true to the charming character he had been from the beginning. Miles was a sweet character and I liked him but the way Luce reacted to Miles made her doubt what she had with Daniel. Well if she felt that way then STOP complaining and leave him. She was tormenting Daniel with all her crap. But she kept saying he was tormenting her by not letting her make her own decisions about things blah blah blah. And the only thing the book really talked about was "announcers, announcers, announcers" it got very irritating after a while. Only good things in this book was Daniel and how the author described the demons' wings. Luce was irritating throughout the book. I hope passion turns out better and fallen was 1000 times better than torment. Because torment was horrible.

Fallen makes you interested in Daniel and Luce's backstory and their Great Love. Torment is suppose to show a glimpse of this great love without giving away the good stuff. Instead torment gives you nothing but a headache. Luce does a complete 180 in her feelings toward Daniel. In Torment she's keeps trying to justify why Daniel is wrong in all his decisions concerning her and their history. Plus she chooses her new 'friends' over Daniel (Miles kiss, Roommate&Daniel backstory). I thought she LOVED him? Luce was very annoying, immature, and defiant for no reason. Plus she had to have everything spelled out for her beofore she got it. How many people have to tell you before you get it- Your life is in danger and Daniel is trying to protect you regardless of the cost. I was disappointed in how their Great Love was portrayed in this book. I wish Luce would have stopped complaining and try to see things from Daniel's persepctive not just her own. Daniel did not decide the mental beating Luce was giving him.

Fallen was my favourite book and I was so excited when Torment came out, but when I started reading I was like "seriously?!" Luce went from being a down to earth to being somewhat shallow and vapid at times. Then the whole Cam thing, last book was "i want her, you know why" and then what-nothing. No fighting for her, no lingering looks, no love triangle what-so-ever, not even a little bit! And Daniel was a little pompous in this book. I finished it, but barely. I'll read the next book, but only because i feel like I owe it to Fallen to give it a try.

Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.I enjoyed Fallen and therefore wanted to read the second in the planned trilogy series. I should have reread Fallen before reading this because I was a little lost on the plot, why the Outcasts were after Luce. I felt in the dark about what was happening, much like Luce felt in the book. She gets moved to Shoreline where she will be safe and the whole book revolves around Luce discovering her past lives through the announcers (shadows). She is questioning her relationship with daniel and exploring the possibility that Daniel might not be the only guy for her. I felt like the book was slow moving and you never really learn anything. I like Kate's descriptive wording and it draws you into the story but the story was lacking of any real substance. I also felt like the romance with Luce and Daniel was a bit cheesey and not as authentic as I would have liked. There were parts that I found interesting and I will definitely read Passion when it comes out, just to find out what the heck is going on.

Luce being told not to do something (for her own protection) and then doing it anyway...chapter after chapter. Lost my connection with the main characters I loved in the first book. I was left feeling very disappointed.

My thoughts...Another captivating tale from Lauren Kate. Torment leaves readers questioning their judgement and yearning for more.
Book one, Fallen, gave readers a glimpse into this magical world of good and evil. Lines were drawn in the sand and the Angels fell in line, declaring their sides. In Torment, the lines were blurred and the challenge to the reader was deciding who was good and who was siding with evil. This second installment explained more of the history of Luce's life, including the parts with Daniel and without. While he was not a primary character, he still played an integral part of the story. Readers lean more about the shadows that haunt Luce and how she can manipulate them.
Luce is moved from her prison at Sword and Cross to an exquisite private school for Nephilim. This change in atmosphere brings about some important changes in Luce, including her attitude. Her character showed incredible growth in this story. She starts standing taller and questioning her fate. While some of the favorites from Fallen are still around, we meet several new characters that keep the story interesting. Several, I am sure will be sticking around for future books.
As a fan of Fallen, I was easily wrapped up in Torment. Kate did not disappoint with her world or character development. The plot was interesting and developed, adding more pieces to the puzzle. The ending...ahhh the ending left the reader hanging off the edge of a cliff. I can hardly wait for the third installment to be released in Summer 2011.

This my friend is probably by far the most intriguing, edgy, romantic, mysterious, head boggling, dancing around when you find out the truth, screaming i knew it, blushing at every scene, holding your breathe, secretly wishing this would happen to you, laughing at how dorky you're being, most beautiful work of art kind of book i have ever read, it entices me that there is such a book out there with this type of literacy, great work Lauren Kate, i am absolutely Tormented that i cant devour "Torment" as i wished.

I am in love with this catch phrase for this book. It simply screams "This book is amazing. You must read it!" and I must say that I agree. Torment is the sequel to the New York Times Best Seller, Fallen. If you have not read Fallen, Torment may be hard to get into. Torment picks up right where Fallen left off. Luce has been removed from Sword and Cross and is going into hiding. Cam and Daniel (fallen angels on different sides of the line) have drawn up a truce lasting 18 days. In this time period both sides will work together toward a common goal, protecting Luce from the Outcasts.
For her own safety Daniel and Cam agree to keep Luce at Shoreline, a school filled with Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and humans. Here Luce begins to uncover the truth behind the Announcers (the shadows that have followed her all of her life) and her past lives. Luce is beginning to understand that it is not just her and Daniel who have been hurt by her many deaths. With each life there is a family that is left behind. Is it right for her to keep hurting those she loves? With this knew knowledge it is becoming harder for Luce to overlook Daniels half truths and his insistence that he can not stay with her now. Daniel may be her past and her present but is he really her future? Could Luce be happy with someone else?
Luce is a much stronger character in this book. She is not content with waiting around and just blindly taking orders anymore. More characters are introduced in Torment as well. Miles is a great addition to the series. He will have everyone questioning whether they should ditch their Team Daniel shirts for a shiny new Team Miles one. Shelby (Luce's new roommate) is brash, stubborn, and has a history of her own with Daniel and Luce, but she is also impossible not to love. Most of the characters from Fallen make an appearance in Torment but I was disappointed that there wasn't more Cam. I hope he plays a bigger role in future books.
The one thing that may seem frustrating is that like all series this is a cliffhanger. The next book will be Passion. It is set to release in Fall 2011. Passion will be a sort of prequel to the series. Once you finish Torment you may have a better idea of what exactly that could mean. I don't want to spoil anything ;) Then Rapture will be released in 2012 to wrap up the series. So expect to be frustrated after turning that last page. :)

I stumbled on Lauren Kate's book Fallen by accident and decided to give it a go. Couldn't put it down. Was so glad when Torment came out this past week and read it in 2 days. Luce and Daniel's story totally draws you in. My heart break's for Daniel and the struggle he and Luce are going through. Just when you think you will find out what the big Mystery is you don't. Now I have to wait for the next book and it is Tormenting to have to wait so long.

This book, a sequel to Fallen, is easy to read and has enough good dialogue, mystery and intrigue to keep the reader moving through the book. I am not a YA and stumbled into these books purely as a recommendation of one of my high school students. What I liked about these two books was the ease with which you can get through them. The storyline flows easily and the author creates intrigue through relatively descriptive scenes. The characters are likeable and at times funny, with the perfect amount of romance interjected to give it that young love feel. Futhermore, the books do leave you wanting more of the story despite the fact that the characters are teenagers with very abnormal lives. I could identify with the characters and their torment even though I am YEARS removed from my teens. I say GO FOR IT! You won't be disappointed provided you go into it KNOWING what to expect.
