Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
The book has a love scene in it that is pretty hot for a YA novel. Not that I minded. It’s not a consummated one, of course. But if our hero hadn’t freaked out because...(to find out why, you’ll just have to read the book)...well, it would have been consummated. As much as I like my sex scenes, and I do, Torn was right up my alley. Overall, the book is well-written, the storyline unique, and the plot strong.
From The Critics
The storyline in Torn is unusual and refreshing. While it is about the fight between good and evil—a common enough plot—the heroine is born of the dark but determined to fight for the light. She is also confused. She knows she wants to fight for good, but she is very tempted by the darkness within her. As she struggles to make her choice, the plot shifts on us and gives us more than one surprise. I was very impressed by Hughes.

Meet the Author

A former Army brat, Christine Hughes moved quite often. She spent much of her time losing herself in books and creating stories about many of the people she’d met. Falling in love with literature was easy for her and she majored in English while attending college in New Jersey.

Not sure where her love of reading and writing fit, she became a middle school English teacher. After nine years of teaching others to appreciate literature, she decided to take the plunge and write her first novel. Now at home focusing on making writing her new career, she spends her time creating characters and plot points instead of grading papers.

Music has become an integral part of her writing process and without the proper playlist, Hughes finds the words don’t flow. At least a few times a week she can be found at the local Barnes & Noble with her mac and headphones working on her next novel.

Samantha English’s life has become a deep dark nightmarish dream. Her best friend Lucas whom she had grown up with and his brother Ethan are powerful angels. They are special angels sent from above to help watch over and protect Samantha. The life that she thought was her own was all just a façade. After the life-altering events that followed the death of her father, James English, she is forced to confront a world that she didn’t even know existed, a world that she was protected from for almost eighteen years. It is a world where fallen angels, the Exiled and the Faithful, are at war with each other. It is Light against Dark, but both were needed to keep the balance of the universe. The Box of Hope was the key, the special box that James England died trying to protect from the hands of the Exiled. Samantha must find the box for she is the keeper of the pendent, The Heart of Hope. The two must come together in order for the balance to be restored. Samantha has been told that she is the key to keeping the balance between both sides. She must find the box along with The Heart of Hope pendent. She is the keeper of hope, faith and love and without it, only darkness and despair would exist. Born of both the light and the dark, Samantha must make a powerful choice. Will she fight on the side of light or will the pull of the darkness inside overcome her?. The love that she has for her guardian angel Ethan is all but forbidden, and after the ultimate betrayal that devastates her, Samantha has no other choice than to follow her destiny.

"Torn" by author Christine Hughes is a supernatural fantasy at its best. As the title implies, the characters are all fighting a battle within. Torn is a place where angels coexist and live undetected by humans. It is a world where there is continuous struggle between light and dark, good and evil, and hope and despair. Torn is a world that one can’t help become lost in. The characters in the book are interesting and it all seems very real and not just a supernatural fantasy. And the story is believable in that the reader has no other choice than to be captivated by the words on the pages. The reader easily gets swept up in Samantha English’s world where angels prevail and evil is all around. If you enjoy the lure of the supernatural, this book is for you. "Torn" by Christine Hughes will not disappoint you and will keep you longing for more. I can’t wait until book two becomes available.

This is my first YA book with fallen angels as the theme. I wasn't sure what to expect with them as main characters and was more than happy to give them a try. Torn started exciting right away but then for just a bit was confusing which bogged me down just a tad. There are some flashback scenes in the first few chapters that I had to reread to determine when it exactly it was taking place. But by the middle of the book the story had picked up and really started to move coming to a great climax at the end.

What I liked about it was Samantha's "walking the line" between darkness and light and the decision she has to make. I liked that this wasn't quite as predictable as some may have written. Samantha is complex and not your typical heroine.

I will definitely read the next book in this series.

    Torn by Christine Hughes

After reading the synopsis for this book I knew I would enjoy it and I was right. It is a great story and I can't wait to read the next book in the series. Torn is a YA book, but it doesn't necessarily feel like YA to me, so don't let that hold you back from reading it. I really liked Samantha and she is true to the title of the book, torn between light and dark, wanting to be on the side of light but struggling to live with/control the dark. To me it was great example of the struggle of light and dark inside us all. I enjoyed the conflict and how those around her weren’t all enamored with her from the very beginning. I enjoyed the romance in the book as well and can't wait to see how that develops in future books. The book kept me guessing, and I had to get used to the jumping back and forth in the timeline but I figured it out. Again really good book and look forward to reading more!

Torn is quite simply amazing. Hughes holds your attention from the very first chapter, dangling you with suspense and anticipation.I could literally feel the emotions that Samantha was emenating just pouring off the pages. You really have to feel for Sam as her life as only she knows it is yanked away from her and she's thrown into a battle between light and dark with Samantha being smack dab in the middle. She deals with love, loss, betrayl, grief, and transformation in such a short period of time, you wonder how she can handle it. But she does, the only way she knows how. I found myself becoming angry right along with Sam as she discovers the biggest betrayl of her life. Amidst the chaos, Sam finds strength through her growing love for Ethan. They are both fighting the feelings they have for each other while also fighting the darkness they were both born into. When they're both betrayed by the person that they least suspect, the battle to balance the light and dark takes precedent over the love that they can't ignore. Hughes leaves you on the edge of your seat as one battle ends and the war continues. I can't wait for the sequel!!!!

There a some books that take you awhile to get into the story. Then there are those rare few diamonds that can capture you at the first few words. This is one of those rare books! Immediately you are brought into Sam's world and you are hooked from there on out. I couldn't put this book down! I can't wait to read the sequel and hope she maybe has a prequel in her as well! What an amazing storyline and the twists just had me continuously guessing up until the very end! HIGHLY recommend this book!

The YA paranormal thriller Torn by Christine Hughes is an excellent, well-written novel, and I was instantly unable to put it down. This highly addictive story begins with action on the very first page and keeps the reader immersed in a whirlwind of mystery, suspense, and romance throughout. I was immediately able to connect with the protagonist, Samantha. Having always thought of herself as a "typical girl", she finds out how very untrue that is after the tragic death of her father. Everything she ever thought she knew is proven false, and she must come to terms with a very new and frightening reality. As a descendant of angels, she is caught between light and dark, having to decide not only who it is she will choose but also who she will fight alongside in an epic good vs. evil confrontation. This is not an easy decision for her, and I thought the internal conflict that she faced was written in a way that made her extremely believable as she struggled with confusion, grief, anger, and heartache on her journey toward becoming stronger and more sure of her destiny.

Samantha is watched over by her life-long best friend, Lucas, and his older brother, Ethan. Though Lucas has become more like a brother to her, Samantha has secretly fallen for Ethan, as he has fallen for her. The romantic tension that exists between them is heightened by the fact that theirs is a "forbidden love". There are many moments between them - both sweet and steamy - that have the reader cheering for them as a couple no matter the consequences. The author's voice and style are incredible, creating a world into which the reader can easily become immersed. The plot twists keep the reader guessing until the very end of the book. I highly recommend Torn and know that you, like I, will be left wanting more of Samantha's, Ethan's, and Lucas's story once you reach the end of this first book in the series.

Torn was a great book. I like how Hughes demonstrated the relationship between good and evil. Samantha is a strong female character, not quite as whiny as many other female leads in YA these days. All in all, I'd definitely recommend it.

    Definitely recommend this book!

TORN was an awesome read - fast paced and intriguing. Samantha is a great main character and I was so interested in the descriptions between light and dark. The yin and yang of good and evil isn't something I've read before - usually one fights the other - but in this book, Hughes develops a relationship between the two creating a world where hope cannot live without despair. I highly recommend this book. Pick it up, you definitely won't be disappointed - especially f you love paranormal reads as much as I do.

How would you take it if you were suddenly told you were the hinge between right and wrong?  The book begins with Samantha's father's last moments and his will to try and send something to her via magic.  She has grown up thinking her daddy is a doctor....when really he's a fallen angel.  A "bad" angel turned "good" and out to keep the balance of hope.  Her mother died when Sam was young so all she had left was her daddy.  Her two best friends moved into her house to help her until she turned 18.  Both best friends are good looking men and she was attracted to one as a young girl but suddenly finds herself consumed with the other as she nears her 18th birthday.  Finding out she's the balance of Hope and she must train to keep the balance she's not sure she'll be up to the test.  A friends betrayal hurts but pushes her to continue her calling.

I think this is an interesting story about the balance of Hope charged by God to the Angels even though they have fallen from Heaven.  Though you can be consumed by evil if you're willing to have Hope then good will always persevere.  I think Christine Hughes has done a great job at showing this balance in this story between Samantha, her father, and her friends.  If you're a reader of paranormal stories, this is one you will like.  I rate this story a 4/5 stars.   I received this book to review from Trudy and Friends Book Reviewers.

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

I am amazed! So many books have been written lately in the Angel genre of good vs. evil that I truly thought this was just going to be the same story only written with a few new twists. Engaging right from the start, this Author surprised me with a fresh new look at being a fallen angel. When being good isn't always about being totally in the light. Where good people go bad, and good people die. It isn't a fantasy land where everything glows golden, it is darkness, twisted and evil and the struggle within each person to overcome being on one side or the other. The constant battle with the demons within and the challenges that are thrown at you whether you are ready or not. This is what the main character, Samantha, faces when she finds out everything she knew in her life was an illusion. Her best friend and his brother are sworn to protect her, but the twist here is are they protecting her from Sebastian or herself? It is a story of secrets and betrayals. But most of all a story of Hope and that touched me more than anything as the Author told Samantha's story. Without Hope life would crumble around us all and this is what you will find within these pages.

A great book based on Angelic lore, friendship, romance and mystery. I am looking forward to the sequel as the cliff hanger at the end sets it up so well!
