Full of detail yet simply written, this book will draw the attention of young students. The subject matter may be somewhat frightening, but the imaginative illustrations soften that aspect of this weather phenomenon. The author has written many books about nature and the weather and offers a clear explanation of what causes a tornado accompanied by illustrations sure to help readers understand the weather situations that come together to create a funnel cloud, which, when it touches the ground, becomes a tornado. The classification of tornadoes is called the Fujita Tornado Scale, after T. Theodore Fuijita who developed the scale, which is primarily based upon the damage caused. The scale ranges from EF-0 to EF-5. The author makes it easy for the reader to understand the differences between the rated storms. The book explains wind speeds and presents the amount of damage likely caused by the wind, not only in the text, but also in the illustrations. The text also provides kids with suggestions about taking shelter during a tornado. Reviewer: Carolyn Mott Ford

Gibbons uses her trademark watercolor cartoon images and simple text to introduce readers to scientific information. Descriptions of tornado mechanics and creation are followed by a discussion of the Fujita Tornado Scale. Six spreads demonstrate the various levels of severity (0 to 5) and describe the wind speeds and damages typically caused by storms of each scale. Descriptions of Tornado Alley, meteorologists, warning information, and tips on what to do during a tornado follow. A spread on the Great Tri-State Tornado references human casualties. The last page includes some additional facts, including a mention about the direction that tornadoes spin, and referrals to the NOAA and Environment Canada Web sites.
