I've been reading techno-thrillers for years, and this one now ranks #1 on my list for sheer action, drama, and "grab you by the throat" tension. I've been priviledged enough to take a "Tiger Cruise" on a Aegis Class Guided Missile Cruiser (USS Monterey -- CG61), so to read about the weapons systems I saw demonstrated on that cruise brings back lots of great memories. From the SPY Radar to the CIWS swatting incoming missiles out of the sky; from the "we're going to roll over" turns to the 5 inch deck guns pounding shore batteries, this book brought back fond memories of my cruise. If you like Dale Brown, Patrick Robinson, and Michael DiMercurio, you'll love Jeff Edwards' "Torpedo". 5 out of 6 people found this review helpful. Was this review helpful? My buddy should have warned me to strap in, because this book moves at flank speed. The scenario is plausible enough to have me checking the headlines, and the writing is crisp, detailed, and powerful. There¿s no Hollywood style hero to be found here; no Jack Ryan; no miracle-working Jonesy, and no character that John Wayne would have stood in line to play. Just a crew of hardworking sailors with ordinary abilities, pooling their skills and knowledge to do the nearly impossible. This is the first book I¿ve seen in years that made think that the author really knows the Navy. It renewed my appreciation of the service members who protect America, and reminded me that there really are bad guys out there. The technical details are first rate. The plot is sharp, utterly believable, and more than a little frightening. 1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. Was this review helpful? Recent entries in this genre have been so lame that I thought the field was dead. Imagine my surprise when I find that naval thrillers can still dish out the adrenaline. This book is billed as a Surface Warfare Thriller. It is that, but it¿s a lot more. It¿s a return to basic principles. It¿s got the fire of Clancy¿s early books, with none of the Hollywood hoke. On a separate note, it¿s nice to discover an author who can write about women as technical experts, women as diplomats, and women as warriors, without turning the book into a soap opera. Forget Commander Amanda Garret, who apparently can¿t manage to command a warship without going all googly-eyed over the first hunky pilot who swaggers her way. Here comes Chief Petty Officer Theresa McPherson: submarine hunter, tactician, and professional Sailor. Fortyish and tough as iron, she doesn¿t have to check her makeup before she goes into battle. I give this book 4 stars, because no book is perfect. This one does come pretty close... 1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. Was this review helpful? I have always thought that the Rules of Engagement were hobbles to our military, but this let me understand that they actually make sense, and can work. Was this review helpful? #### A book that engulfed me.

Jeff Edwards is a newly discovered author for me, but he quickly won me over. I am a dedicated Clive Cussler officionado, so when Dirk was reading a Jeff Edwards book I was, naturally, intrigued. I really enjoy the truthfulness, technical veracity and complexity of his books. The characters are life-size and attractive and the plot is engaging to a point where I race to the end of the book in a daze. This book is also very well put together, with the different plot lines converging in a breathtaking culmination that is both predictable but stunning. It is fast paced, credible, believable, and thoroughly enjoyable.

#### The best book I have read \in a long time.

I will be a Jeff Edwards fan for a long long time. The day I finished this book, I bought another ( the first I have ever done that ). I am a HUGE espinoge good guy/bad guy fan. I have read ALL of Clive Cussler, Tom Clancy, Dale Brown, and Robert Ludlum novels. This one took me by suprise. It started quick and ended fast. What I liked the most was that the good guys didnt win with every chapter. Plus, the terminology was written for non-military people. I understood eveything, believed all the characters and waited for there decisions...I am 200 pages deep in his second book and cant wait for his third. Great Book!

#### I gave this book a try because i figured what the heck for .99 .

I gave this book a try because i figured what the heck for .99 . I REALLY enjoyed this book. The book was fast paced and kept my attention even when shifting from location to location. The mix of military and political suspense pulled me into the world of naval warfare in what would be todays theater of operations. I will be looking for more from Jeff Edwards.
