Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jan Lieberman
Avner Katz delights us with his original 'how and why' tale. The 3 Wise Tortoises send off a talented young tortoise to design a home for the tortoise clan because they are homeless. He returns year after year with unique designs, revolving roofs, double chimneys, towers of light and color - all unsuitable for tortoises. His last chance: a design that provides protection and power. It's brilliant. Of course, it is a single dwelling, but then...who needs guests? Perfect blend of pictures and text.
Janice Del Negro
"There was a time--you may even have already heard about it--when the tortoise didn't have a house. . . . He was always out, and never in." Then three wise tortoises have an idea. They find a tortoise with an "obvious gift for building" and send him off to learn from master builders all over the world. The budding architortoise returns with lots of ideas, none of which suit. Disheartened, he builds "himself a hill a long way off and [climbs] on top of it to think." He is suddenly inspired, and his new plan, the tortoise shell, is heartily approved by all. Starting with a typical "pour quoi" tale opening, this story veers off on its own humorous tangent in both text and cartoonlike pictures. Each watercolor is framed in red, yellow, green, or blue, with the frame picking up the bright spots of color in each picture. The book jacket illustration is less successful than the inside art, which, however, with its white backgrounds, low horizon lines, and dead-on perspectives, has immediacy and vigor; and the use of different fonts adds interest to the composition without distracting from it. A good read-aloud title with wide appeal--younger children will accept it at face value while older ones and adults will appreciate the more sophisticated subtext and visual humor.
