Overview

The 20th century witnessed the fiercest confrontations in human history. In these near-limitless conflicts, rival powers mobilized all of their might—military, civilian, technological, and industrial—to overwhelm or even annihilate each other. Nearly 40 million soldiers were to die in this era of total war.

Complemented by 50 dramatic photographs, military historian Charles Winchester sets each engagement—from Iwo Jima to Stalingrad—in its historical context, detailing the strategies and circumstances that led to victory or catastrophic defeat. Packed with timelines, quotations from the combatants, and feature boxes on the key details of the battle, Total War is the gripping and richly informative story of the conflicts that made the modern world.
