Overview

Explore the solar system, learn about life and conditions on other planets, and analyze examples of UFO sightings in this dynamic book. Kids are transported into spaceships descending into the atmosphere of three types of planets, high gravity, low gravity, and earth-like gravity, and create space creatures using mix-and-match parts included in the book. Totally Aliens lets children use their imagination to create five space creatures designed to live on four different planets or they can create their own. This OO includes 40 different sturdy plastic pieces to mix and match parts, as well as a 32-page book which discusses what scientists know about life in the universe.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
We have here another toy in a box. Models of five aliens suitable for snapping together, Lego-style, are the prime selling point. There is, however, a slim booklet enclosed which is written with more intelligence than one dares to suppose possible, given the garish plastic and the subject. Schatz has managed to cobble a clever little science lesson around the toys. Real topics such as extremophiles, Hydrogen, Helium and gravity are discussed in conjunction with the possible shapes an alien might take due to the nature of its environment. Planets within the earth's solar system are used as examples of extraterrestrial homes that might exist farther out in the universe. "Might" is the attitude used throughout. "Limitations" to the existence of such creatures is the bottom line. If you can get the kid past the plastic to the book, the end result of the package can be some good fun┬żand a thinking experience. 2001, Silver Dolphin, $15.95. Ages 8 to 10. Reviewer: Kathleen Karr
