Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Kids will love the page in this book, from the "Ripley's Believe It or Not" series, that tells about a baseball that weighs 2,700 pounds because its owner has applied at least one coat of paint to it every day for the last thirty-three years! Or they may like learning about the man from New York who has the most records of any person. His records include one for pogo-stick jumping, one for brick-carrying, and another for pushing an orange with his nose for a mile. As with the other books in this series, all facts are offered in short blurbs or in some of the several fact bars scattered throughout the book. Especially fun are the "Top Five" fact bars. The photos in this book will have kids taking a second look. Most photos go with the information that does not seem "normal," but all facts presented are true according to the official Ripley's site. Teachers can use the book to supplement science, social studies, and math lessons. Kids will discover it works well to read only a few blubs at a time or several pages depending on how much time they have. An excellent index appears at the back of the book and the back cover carries a great warning: "Be advised, inside these covers it is always extraordinary, sometimes scary, and frequently weird."
