Totally Tejano, Vol. 3: Old School

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Alex Henderson
A departure from Volumes 1 and 2 of DCC's Totally Tejano series, Vol. 3 contains more fast tempos and places less emphasis on romantic material. The CD is quite eclectic, ranging from La Movida's Santana -ish instrumental "Movida Power" to Gary Hobbs' funk-influenced "Born on the Border" and La Onda Airwaves' medley of 1960s soul classics. The Mexican polka beat is hard to miss on performances by David Lee Garza & Ram Herrera "El Tejano Enamorado", Bobby Naranjo y Direccion's "Pa Todo El Ano" and Romance "Dimi Si Soy Un Tonto", but it's important to note the differences between the music on this disc and traditional, straight-ahead ranchero music. Tejano tends to be much sleeker and employs a lot of electric keyboards and synthesizers, as opposed to ranchero's extensive use of the accordion. Unlike ranchero, Tejano is essentially Latin pop. Tejano whose name is Spanish for "Texan" is more a product of the Mexican-American/Chicano culture than the south-of-the-border experience. But then, one needn't be of Mexican heritage to appreciate the richness of these recordings.
