Kakashi's hell-bent on adventure and stows away on an airship named Baum. Hiding in the cargo, he befriends a puppy with an ornate collar. After attacks on the ship by pirates and pursuers, Kakashi ("scarecrow") parachutes out with the pup, crash-lands in a cornfield, and runs into Dorothy. She's on her way to the city of Emerald to see her parents. From here, things get increasingly complicated as the pup, dubbed Toto, turns out to be the secret weapon being transported in the airship before the pirates took over. Now the Nassau Imperial Army wants to reclaim the dog, which-thanks to the collar-can turn into a giant hound with amazing powers. In Vol. 3, Kakashi learns that his beloved adventurer father is still alive and the reason why the collar and 11 other powerful "accessories" were set loose. This isn't a recasting of the classic Wizard story but a different and quite entertaining five-volume tale with Oz features skillfully stitched in. Including a crew of feisty kids (Dorothy is captain of the Tornado senjutsu team and the Lion, a wannabe entertainer with stage fright), engaging villains, plenty of action, and energetic art, this steampunk romp will appeal to teens up.
