Children's Literature
The sense of touch is explained in this installment from "A True Book" series. Chapter One, "Your Sense of Touch," explains how valuable and elaborate the sense of touch is. Chapter Two, "The Skin You Are In," describes the different layers of the skin and their functions. Chapter Three, "How Do You Feel," explains how the nerves carry messages from the skin to the brain. Chapter Four, "When You Can't Feel," describes how cold, injuries, and repetition (such as wearing glasses and not noticing them after a while) can affect the sense of touch. Chapter Five, "Take Care of Your Skin," lists things that people can do to keep their skin in good shape. A few single page blurbs of fun facts about touch and a glossary round out the text of the book. Glossy photos, close-ups, and diagrams provide lots of visual interest. There are a few punctuation errors that closer editing should have noticed. This book would be a good addition to any health or science class. 2003, Scholastic,

Gr 2-4-Each large-print text discusses the organ or body part responsible for its sense, how the brain reacts to sensory receptors, and ways of maintaining sensory health. Each book has a fact page of trivia about its respective sense. Clear diagrams, close-up photographs of children, and magnified images illustrate these titles. Given the amount of unfamiliar terminology in each book, it is unfortunate that there are no pronunciation guides. Nonetheless, these are well-written, accurate, and readable choices.-Pamela K.
