Overview

This little sampler is four short non-fiction stories:

• A humorous piece involving Groupon and a male masseuse. Would you go through with a massage, if given at the hands of an overweight, creepy man?
• One comedian’s trip to Afghanistan to perform for American troops stationed far from home. It is a look behind the Wizard’s Curtain, with notes from the front that rarely end up in the media.
• The tale of a friend’s skill in finding discarded pornography, specifically a Polaroid picture of a nude man. Most people would throw such an item away; this was used it to embarrass classmates.
• Madison, Wisconsin, 1970, and the Sterling Hall bombing. A young mother passes the scene of the crime, growing ever more uneasy about the safety of her family.

Funny, touching, and bordering on poignant, it is an all-too-short sample of Nathan's extraordinary life.

Editorial Reviews

Dayton Most Metro
Nathan Timmel’s book, I Was A White Knight…Once is a memoir that, while not filled with famous names or events, tells the simple story of growing up in the midst of social and familial dysfunction and coming out the other side. It paints a poignant vignette of an era and an epoch that, while not necessarily relatable to all of our lives, still resonates with the reader. The exemplary writing and moving mood of the narrative is compelling without being bombastic or unbelievable.

He is one of the best comedians I have ever seen and so I wanted to read his book out of curiosity. As a reader, you get sucked into the emotion and realness of his story. Sitting in my reading chair, I was giggling to myself through parts, rolling my eyes at his crass nature and shaking my head in wonderment. I challenge you to pick up this book and promise you will enjoy it whole-heartedly, just as I did.
Barnes & Noble Review
Nathan is an amazing storyteller that paints scenery you can visualize, then throws a curve ball, displaying his somewhat dark sense of humor. This book makes you cry and smile, and at times, you just want to seek him out and give him a great big hug.
Barnes & Noble Review
A compelling tale of what makes a person become a comedian and how the events, tragedies, and actions in their life help build their persona on stage. He shares with us personal stories of his proudest moments performing for troops overseas and let’s each of us into that world more than we would normally be permitted.
