“[Durgin] has a magic touch for creating rich fantasy.”
–Rochester Democrat & Chronicle

“I loved Touched by Magic and was sorry to see it end.”
–S.M. Stirling

“Mystery, suspense, and loyalty fill out the plot, but primarily this novel focuses on the dangers of obsession. it also deals hauntingly with loss: of loved ones, of home and status, of entire ways of life…. It will keep you guessing right to the end, and there are no simple solutions to the complex problems presented.”
–Hypatia’s Hoard

“It’s been years since I read this. I remember I loved it…Mostly, I remember the characters – because rich characterization is one of Durgin’s best skills. One of many, of course – she also writes great action scenes, and moves the plot along briskly. I can’t wait to read this again!” –B&N Reader

“An excellent read! Touched by Magic has a Game of Thrones quality, combining gritty realism with ethereal fantasy in a rich and suspenseful journey of a man haunted by the past.” –B&N Reader

“I LOVED Touched by Magic! Doranna Durgin is one of those rare and gifted fantasy authors who create vibrant characters you really, really care about. I’d give this book ten stars if I could.” –B&N Reader

What People are saying about this

S. M. Stirling
I loved Touched by Magic, and I was sorry when it came to an end.

Meet the Author

Doranna's quirkiness of spirit has led to an eclectic publishing journey since that her first award-winning novel, spanning genres over nearly 50 novels to include mystery, SF/F, action-romance, paranormal, franchise, and a slew of essays and short stories. Beyond that, mostly she still prefers to hang around outside her New Mexico mountain home with the animals, riding dressage on her Lipizzan and training for performance sports with the dogs. She doesn't believe so much in mastering the beast within, but in channeling its power. For good or bad has yet to be decided... Along with the occasional original, these Smashwords editions are author presentations of favorites once found on bookstore shelves.

Having enjoyed this book when it was published in paper form back in the 1990's, I am delighted to be able find it again for my Nook so I can read it again. Doranna Durgin has a unique ability to craft a gripping story with her skillful use of descriptive language.

It's been years since I read this. I remember I loved it. I remember bits and pieces of the story, and the general over-all plot, but not enough to do a proper review. Mostly, I remember the characters - because rich characterization is one of Durgin's best skills. One of many, of course - she also writes great action scenes, and moves the plot along briskly. I can't wait to read this again!

642 nook pages. Excllent read. Magic has left the world. Been gone for a generation. Then how come one wizard still ha power? How come the Kings Wolf can feel this magic being used? Evil wizard, good kings man, who will win?

AWFUL! DO NOT BOTHER! I didn't make it past the 2nd chapter this was so bad! The characters made no sense and there wasn't any plot! Maybe it got better. However, I'm really glad I got this lousy eBook for free since if I had to pay for it (currently $3.99) I would have felt cheated!

So well written, I was astounded!! It was such a pleasure to read. Thank you dear author-- for your mastery of sentence structure and English. The story itself was fabulous. I can not express my gratitude for the joy I felt . Bingaux

This book was a difficult read in the beginning. The story did not unfold smoothly and I had to reread several parts. I'm so glad I pushed through the first 40 pages! I enjoyed the story (after the rough beginning) and especially loved the characters. I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

This book is a quite creative story about magic and vengeance in a world without magic. It is also a tale of a man finding himself and becoming satisfied with what he finds.

Interesting story, wonderful characters, intriguing land where magic once was common and an evil wizard that it is easy to hope will get his comeuppance from the good characters that play major roles in the story all can be found in this story. This is the first book in the Magic Rising series and as with all of the books I have read by this author I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end. This series has great potential for many more books if the author feels like writing them. The characters and places have been introduced, friendships have been discussed, possibilities for the future have been mentioned and the potential for strife between good and evil through magic have been tantalizingly been made known. I look forward to finding out what will happen to the characters I got to know in this book as other books in the series are released. Thank you to LibraryThing for the copy of this ARC to read and review.
