Editorial Reviews

Denise Perry Donavin
Brazelton's "Touchpoints" are actually moments of regression in a young child's life just before a surge of rapid growth (cognitive, motor, or emotional) when "the child's behavior falls apart." An awareness of the timing and meaning of such difficult behavior can give parents understanding, according to Brazelton, and bring them into harmony with their offspring rather than contention. These touchpoints, which start in the late months of pregnancy and continue throughout the first three years, provide a map of infancy and the early years of development. Beyond this navigational guide to normal development, Brazelton, who has been working with families for over 40 years, supplies insight into other challenges of a medical, familial, or psychological nature. Finally, with this magnum opus, Brazelton delivers advice to his professional peers when he points out the importance of a doctor-patient relationship that goes beyond charting illnesses.
