Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
When the first grade class decides to have a costume party, all of the children are excited about planning their costumes. As they arrive for the party and are setting out the refreshments, Jim comes in dressed as "The Strongest Man in the World." Suddenly, while the teacher is out getting something from her car, third grade bully Zoogy challenges Jim as "the strongest man" to a fight and pulls his helmet down over his eyes. Not able to see, Jim crashes into Zoogy, knocking him into the wastebasket. When the others laugh at him, Zoogy leaves. The returning teacher thinks that Zoogy has learned a lesson and will not bother them again. Himler's watercolors show the children as individuals behaving as kids do. His images go well beyond the words, depicting costumes and actions. George, as "a fried chicken with a crispy crust," is truly immobile. The interactions between Jim and Zoogy are vividly portrayed. The final class picture is one that will offer happy memories. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
