Propelled by the rhetorical gestures of enthusiastic conversationquestions, colloquialisms, sudden intimaciesSears's poems at once engage and confound. The voices in ``Bridgeport'' and ``Bargain'' are as casual as those of neighbors and drinking buddies, while ``The Tablecloth Explanation'' seems a frenzied exercise in automatic writing. ``A Voice Collapsing'' combines both modes to deliver an energized snapshot of human consciousness in fast forward. Sears's rejection of standard poetic refinements guarantees neither an absence of excess nor a sense of authenticity, but it does uncover recognizable bits of contemporary American zeitgeist too often buried in studied gentility.
