Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
History professors Coons and Varias (Chestnut Hill Coll. and Villanova Univ., respectively) have published several scholarly articles on labor, women, travel, and 20th-century Europe. This collaboration marks their first foray into steamship travel in the 1920s and 1930s. During that period, it was the only way for large groups of people-from immigrants, peasants, and children to writers and the wealthy-to cross the Atlantic. The authors describe in great detail, including eyewitness accounts, this form of travel, with chapters on the changing nature of passengers throughout the era, life as a steamship employee (female as well as male), and "controversies of design." Well written, fairly interesting, and sprinkled with relevant quotes, the book is adequately documented with extensive notes; a number of black-and-white photos are included. Buy for women's studies and early 20th-century history collections in academic libraries.-Alison Hopkins, Brantford P.L., Ont. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
