    Hardly worth it

After first hearing her music on the radio while on vacation in Quebec ten years ago, I became a big Lara Fabian fan. She has a passionate voice and unmatched phrasing ability that move us in a way that is at once exhilarating and tender. Unfortunately, this album does not showcase those qualities and is therefore a big disappointment. Toutes Les Femmes En Moi presents a series of selections that tell a personal and musical story of this Belgian (half-Sicilian) chanteuse, celebrating her feminine instincts and qualities while also paying homage to the female personages in her life. The lyrics therefore take us down a semi-autobiographical path. At times, that journey feels light and intimate, but unfortunately can also be too self-indulgent and simply boring. The same can be said of the musical content. For whatever reason, the numbers make use of a variety of genres, which may be Lara's way of acknowledging her international following, but their unconruent character merely make a purposeless statement. Consequently, they sound more contrived than sincere. Because Lara still charms us with her enchanting vocal stylings, the sound is at times pleasant. Yet, since the material and her effort is too often uninspired, the overall listening experience is- dare I say it- dull. Indeed, after I had played the CD perhaps two or three times, I had heard enough. The truth is that Toutes Les Femmes En Moi falls far short of the high standard that Ms. Fabian has set even for herself. It is not at all what we have come to expect from such a brilliant, gifted talent. My only hope is that we have not heard the best that this wonderful artist can provide and that she has not now begun a retreat into a comfortable and safe complacency. Only time will tell. For now, for the first time, I feel cheated.
