Overview

Genre:Vampires & Shapeshifters

Series: Truckee Wolves

There are three things that Dr. Briony Theale loves. Her job as a veterinarian, a good bar of rich, dark chocolate, and Rico, the ranger in charge of the Wildlife Rescue center. When a casual dinner with Rico turns surprisingly intimate, Briony realizes that she might just have a chance with him after all, if only she could lose a few pounds. It's the ultimate sacrifice, but Briony goes cold turkey, and swears off chocolate forever.

Rico Montgomery fell hard for Briony the first time he set eyes on the curvy little doctor. Her rich brown hair and cocoa skin trigger cravings he can barely control, and her fragrance is like the sweetest, richest chocolate he's ever scented in his life. That's a bad thing for Rico, because to a werewolf like him, chocolate is literally a toxin. After his pack warns him off the very human doctor, Rico finds himself even more drawn to Briony.

Rico can't live with it, and Briony can't live without it. And when a certain wandering wolf finds a bag of chocolate in the trash near Briony's clinic, these two will find out just how toxic love can be.

Toxic lacks adequate character development and a clear plot. The story trails a vet who falls in love
with a ranger, who is truly a shapeshifter (wolf). The story’s prologue seemed to be the most
interesting, but the intrigue stopped there. After reading through embarrassingly long pages about
the dangers of dogs eating chocolate, I found myself speed reading to find some breakthrough.
    I didn’t find it.

There’s too much rushed romance and pointless character angles. A trans mom with a psychic son
and telepath daughter who falls in love with a werewolf after meeting him? Dr. Doolittle meets True
    Blood meets Transamerica?

I’m not sure if the author initially intended to make this a series, since everything feels jam packed
into this work. Hopefully there will be more backstory on the mother, brother and Abraxis (the agency
that apparently experiments with supernaturals and the transgendered-um, what?) in the followup
piece. I wouldn’t have categorized this as erotica.

Followup: I just read that a new publisher took over and they “substantially revised and reedited this
edition.” I couldn’t bring myself to read this again, but hope it’s better, just plain ol’ better.

Received an ARC copy from Netgalley for an honest review. Definitely interesting. Book was different than what I would have normally read but was actually impressed with it. Shapeshifter storyline that contained action, suspense and romance with some humor. As a migraine sufferer and not being able to eat chocolate, I loved the theme of chocolate being toxic to Rico, a shapeshifter wolf. I loved Briony and Rico and how they interacted with each other. First book I've read by this author but hope this is the start of a series since there are some unanswered questions. Would recommend.

I've read Mcbride's short stories involving the were pack alpha & betas and the organization. This appears to be the first book dealing with the pack & I enjoyed the full introduction.

I received a copy of this book from Netgallery in exchange for an honest review.

This storyline was somewhat different than normal shifter stories with the experiment aspect and the abilities that some of the characters had.

Briony Theale has been living her life as best as she and her family could for the past twenty years. Rescued from a lab along with her brother and then adopted by her mother Dionne she has always taken precautions throughout her life. Now that she is grown she is determined to live her life to the fullest. She studied hard and became a veterinarian because of her unique ability to sooth wild and hurt animals.

Taking over a small practice in California she can't help but notice the handsome Wildlife Ranger Rico Montgomery. From the first time she saw him she is attracted to him but doesn't believe there will ever be anything between them as Rico is a very handsome man and Briony believes herself to be too plump.

Rico has had his sights set on Briony since the first time he smelled her. To him she smells sweet and just like chocolate. Unfortunately he can't see a future for them considering he is a werewolf. His wolf doesn't care. As far as his wolf side is concerned Briony is his mate.

As a stupid decision by his wolf bring them together, circumstances and his wolf pack could bring danger to Briony. There are choices to be made.

I liked all the characters in the book. My problem with it was that although the story was about Rico and Briony it seemed like Chase and even Dionne were more prominent. They are the ones that stuck out more to me. I would read another book in this series just to see what happens with the rest of the wolf pack.

Toxic is what chocolate is to both schnauzers and wolf shifters.

Toxic is what chocolate is to both schnauzers and wolf shifters. Luckily for them Dr. Briony Theale is on the job. Of course if Ranger Rico from the Wildlife Rescue hadn’t been pining for another taste of Dr. Bree who smells and tastes like chocolate, he might have been able to resist the discarded chocolate bars in the trash can outside the lovely vets office.

This was a fast, easy paced, and well written, fun read. With light BDSM, McBride managed to balance the steamy love scenes with a nice romantic love story. She did a wonderful job of introducing her Truckee Wolf shifters. The characters in this story are as unique as they are engaging and draw you into the story. This was a page turner with some nice twists, humor, romance, a bit of suspense, and some really hot wolves.

I give this book a solid four stars. I look forward to reading more books in this series and highly recommend it to readers who love paranormal romance.

*This book was received from Netgalley for my unbiased review.

First, let me begin with what was...odd or distracting for the novel. I am big on characterization and I love suspense and trying to figure out things, but when the beginning portion of the book began with one character and jumped to another, I was lost for a second. Perhaps I am reading a book caught int he middle of a series?

Either way, the storyline itself was totally unexpected: Briony is a vet and she craves chocolate. What I love about Briony is that she is not described as being stunningly gorgeous or unbelievably thin. She craves chocolate and does not have a "bikini body" but Rico, a Rescuer, finds her very attractive and when they kiss, sparks fly and the heat sizzles on the page. Truckee wolves is about, well- wolves. Without giving too much away, this book hangs on a world  with military geniuses, wolves and other creatures(the other creatures are hinted at or spoken of briefly). This book lays great groundwork for a fantastic series and love how the characters are multicultural.

This book had me a little conflicted. I liked the characters and the storyline, but something just didn't mesh and kept me from truly connecting with the story. I was excited to find a paranormal romance with diverse characters. I love that fact that the characters were not stereotypical characters.

Briony was a smart and strong heroine. She had so much mystery around her and her family I never really felt I knew her. Or maybe I lost interest in finding out too soon. Her crazy love for chocolate and Rico was cute.

Rico's role and him spending so much time in his shifted form, again, left me a little distant from him. I could feel his attraction for Briony and they had good chemistry.

The story had high points and some low points. It took me sometime to read it because I put it down several times to read other books. There is a lot going on with the Rico's pack and Briony's family. I'm not sure it's all fleshed out or I might have missed something along the way.

I'm not sure exactly how I feel about this book, but I can't say I disliked it.

    Love it

I really enjoyed this book. It is the middle story between Belinda's first story in Doms of Darkhaven and is followed by her story in Doms of Darkhaven 2. I enjoyed the stories so much that I wish she would write more. There are so many characters she could ecpand on.

This story has everything. . . love, danger, romance and several hot sex scenes.

    Toxic: Truckee Wolves

**Book provided in exchange for an honest review via NetGalley**

Toxic: Truckee Wolves is an Erotic Paranormal Romance with a splash of suspense.

Not really sure what I feel about this book. On the one hand I quite enjoyed the book but it has left me with too many questions and it doesn’t feel like the book was finished. I understand authors writing series and I am one of these people who loves to stretch the story out into a series but what I don’t like is a book that just gives you a few half of storylines and that’s it. For me a series needs to have at least one storyline running to conclusion in each book but then you also have to have the basis for the series storyline that builds up steam as it passes through each book and then coming to a conclusion in the final book of the series.

I found it really difficult to write this review and I think it’s because I really wanted to give it a glowing review. I loved the relationships between the characters and loved the characters themselves. The storyline had great potential too. I also love the different POV’s but on this occasion I think there was too many, which is where the issue of too many storylines left unfinished. Don’t get me wrong I prefer books that give you alternative POV’s, I connect better with the characters this way. With so many characters wanting to be heard and only part of their stories being divulged it was just too much.

Belinda McBride has a done a great job with this story. It was captivating right off the bat with an introduction chapter about the story of her mysterious and hard core ex- military Mom. Needless to say that could have been another great book. Then she swings you into the story of Briony a sheltered mysterious veterinarian and Rico a were wolf shifter in a small town who are attracted to each other. Briony knows her mother won't approve of the relationship and Rico's pack has warned him away from Briony. Fortunately, neither of them is able to resist the attraction.

I liked this book because both of the main characters were believable and a bit shy about revealing their secrets and true selves. This made them such a cute couple, and really believable. McBride then adds a twist at the end with an unsolved mystery about Briony's Mom and her sexuality. I have to admit that this kind of threw me off a bit, but it obviously was meant to lead to another book

This short novel was well worth the cost and the read. McBride will go in my list of authors to read again and again .Read this, find author interviews and industry news and much more reviews on our blog: romanc ereaders bookshelf.
