Fun, quick fix ! I love playing Arkham Horror, of which this has similar elements, but this sates my need for Lovecraft in a pinch. It's also much easier to teach and learn than Arkham Horror. That being said, it's also much less intense. In terms of gameplay, it feels a bit like Lovecraft themed Yhatzee. Personally, I really enjoy it. I've heard some people complain about how most of the game hinges on the luck of the dice roll - and that's where I find enjoyment. Successfully resolving an encounter may or may not happen depending on your roll, just as it would in life. I like to think of it as a story. My investigator goes to this room in the Museum and does something wrong. I like to imagine it's something simple like making too much noise, causing the threat in the room to take notice of me and cause me damage, forcing me to retreat and try again the next day. Working with your other investigators in this context is much more enjoyable, I think.
If you've ever played Arkham Horror, this game is fun because it shares a lot of the same elements. If you've never played those games, it's still fun. It's a great starter if you're looking to get into these games. That being said, if you've ever played Arkham Horror, this game is a lot less intense. If you're into intense games or you're coming off an Arkham high, this game might not be what you expected. In the end, however, I would absolutely recommend this game. It's easy enough to pick up almost right off the bat, but fun enough to keep the gameplay interesting and exciting.
