Settlers of Catan 4th Edition

Players are recent immigrants to the newly populated island of Catan. Expand your colony through the building of settlements, roads, and villages by harvesting commodities from the land around you. Trade sheep, lumber, bricks and grain for a settlement, bricks and wood for a road, or try to complete other combinations for more advanced buildings, services and specials.

Trade with other players, or at local seaports to get resources you might lack. The first player to achieve 10 points from a combination of roads, settlements, and special cards wins.

For 3 - 4 players.

For ages 10 and up.

This game is the perfect combination of two classics: Risk and Monopoly. Taking place on a large board representative of an island that you're settling, it requires that you expand your settlements through trade, roads, and the construction of more cities. Trading with other players, and the resource gaining of this game all make it interesting and challenging, while being simple enough to remain fun. Highly worth the buy, as it will easily entertain you for hours.

Our family LOVES this game. Though we're all over 12 years old, we wish we had discovered it several years ago -- our kids could have enjoyed it when they were 7+. We love to do side-trading, and create alliances. We're much bigger fans of this than Monopoly, though there are some similar themes in the two games. It seems to demonstrate some basic levels of economics and world economy -- esp. the importance of resource control and ports/trade. We're on the verge of buying an expansion pack so that we can play with more than 4 people -- we are planning to have other families over to play (and don't want to turn it over to ONLY the kids -- my husband and I just wish we had more time to play!). We have a new family tradition evolving in our home -- Tuesday evenings the kids get to design and make pizza for all of us for dinner (every one gets to put their own choice of toppings on), and then as we eat we play Catan! It's wonderful!

This game is one of the best games out there! It requires a perfect combination of luck and skill. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because the instructions are long and complicated. The easiest way to learn is by having some who has played before teach you. If I could I would have rated it 4.5, since the instructions aren't that big of an issue, but there are no half stars.

A combination of Monopoly and Risk, this game is fun, interactive and intellectual. One thing that makes this game different from most is that you must play with each other and against each other at the same time. Another is that every turn, yours or someone elses, you are involved and get to do something. Who thinks up these things?

This game is genius. I understand it was first popular in Germany but once it got to the US my family caught on rapidly. This is my second copy of the game as the first is getting slightly worse for the wear and we also play the expanded Seafarer version (with pirates), which is an entirely different game. The unique thing about this game is setting up the board. Unlike Monopoly which only varies by who buys what and what dice are rolled, this game is different every time you set up the board and therefore a different strategy may be the winning solution! Buy it, read the instructions, and play it for fun.

My husband and I have trouble finding board games that we both enjoy, but we both love this game. We've had a couple of "game nights" at our home, and they've been a big hit. Besides, once the gameplay gets slow/predictable (which I suspect will take quite a while) we can buy one of the extentions, I'm looking forward to getting the pirate one.

This is a great board game for people who like "construction" computer games (Sim City, Tycoon, Caesar, etc.). It requires a lot of careful strategy, but there's still the luck of the dice to make things interesting. The real bonus is the way every game plays out differently because of the clever design of the game.

This is a wonderful game of strategy, where the game board changes every time! We have been hooked ever since we got it for Christmas last year, and have been giving it to all of our friends for presents! Get the expansion set if you have more than 4 players.

I actually have a question. I rated this a 5 because that's what my twitter friend rated it. His whole family loves it! So...I'm just starting out and was told to get the BASE game. Is this 4th edition the base? Thanks for anyone who can help me! I need to order this for a Christmas gift ASAP! SusieQ

WE've played this game a handful of times. It is easy to learn and different every time. It takes awhile to play, but not so intense that you can't hold a conversation while playing. Our Family has enjoyed this game.

one of the best games I have ever played! i recommend it to 13 year-old and above since strategy is the key in this game. collect resources such as wool, grain, ore, brick, and wood as you try and build your cities and try to stack up your points. It is filled with fun and action and It is always without a fail the favorite game at my game-nights.

Wear that badge proud, no geek game collection is complete without a table top RPG or Catan! Set on the fictional (and symmetrical) land of Catan your goal is to trade, barter and build your community. The game board consists of an interlocking border that will contain hexagonal pieces that represent different resources you will need to build roads, settlement and cities. No two games will be the same! Have a large circle of geeky friends? Don't worry there are expansions!

This is a game that my whole family likes to play. All players get to have actions during each player's turn-this reduces lag time making it easier for the kids to enjoy. The rules are pretty simple and by the end of the first game you will probably feel pretty comfortable with them and how the game works.
