I got this kit for my sister, we set it up according to the instructions, and waited, and waited. Nothing happened, even though it was very sunny the day we set it up and several days after. I finally emailed the company and they sent me a word document containing "helpful hints". Without those hints your triop eggs will only hatch if you live in a very hot climate. The kit's instructions do not tell you to: - heat the distilled water up before adding it, the eggs will ONLY hatch if the water is 70 to 80 degrees. - the triops life span pretty much depends on how warm you keep them, and making sure you don't over feed them. - The 2nd half of the eggs should be raised in a separate tank so the larger triops don't eat them. I'm going to try helping my sister heat the water up so they'll hatch, but honestly this kit requires more work than it looks! Only buy this if you live in a hot climate, or are willing to set up a heating lamp.

The little buggers grew but they are really gross looking and they dirty the tank really fast too. My mother hated the things. They also eat each other. But my sister liked this project and liked watching the buggers grow; she got really attatched to them. We had two that got huge but they died because we tried to clean the tank and add fresh water, not knowing it would kill them. I'm only giving three stars because the dang things were so gross.

I think the sea monsters are great!!  I just did not know that temp. was important and not to put the second half of eggs into the same jar!  Our sea monster was huge and we fed it a sea monkey!!  We are getting more sea monsters for sure!!  Fun to watch and easy pet if your children are wanting a pet this may help you please them without getting a high maintenance pet (dog cat etc. )  They hatch and grow much faster and larger than a sea money!!  Cool Fun!  Educational!

Really, REALLY poor instructions. The eggs mixed into the detritus are practically no-good. After 14 days of keeping them at a constant temperature of 76* F (which I had to research myself!), not one triop grew. ONLY ONE tiny "sea monkey" the food for the triops grew. I live in a moderate warm climate, had a heat lamp on, aerated the distilled water, AND re-dried the eggs, no success. The kit doesn't even tell you what species of Triops you have! Is it T. Long or T. Can? Overall, this piece SUCKS. Coming from a 12 year old girl, get better eggs! If you really want to hatch these, order some on e-Bay. They have guaranteed hatching eggs that always work well for me. Sorry, Smithsonian.

You know we bought this kit for our daughter w/ intentions on helping her set it up, but to her amazement she done did the hurry ups to put the kit together herself without reading the instructions. So I just happened to see the tank full of what appeared to look like some polluted water on the table and asked her you her did she read the instructions she said there weren't any Of course, she didn't look, they were on the inside of poster. I've read them and it said to use distilled water she used the faucet. I was so mad but what can you do? Anyway we all were checking this tank every day all day and night just to see how she messed up the project. But we kept them under the cabinet light in kitchen and about for days later we could see something moving. so from Christmas til now these thing have grown almost an half inch. And we live in Northern Michigan.
