Steam Punk Rally

Overview

Steampunk Rally is a strategy game that incorporates steampunk as more than just a bit of chrome. Using a unique dice-placement mechanism, players take on the roles of famous inventors from the turn of the last century like Nikola Tesla and Marie Curie, constructing fantastical contraptions that make use of steam, heat and electricity in an attempt to win a no-holds-barred race through the Swiss alps.

Each round starts with a card draft in which players carefully select machine parts to add to their invention and one-shot boost cards to aid them or hinder opponents. Players also have the option of discarding drafted cards for dice or cogs to power their invention, but they must make this tricky choice when each card is drafted.

Then, after venting dice to revitalize their machines, players roll their dice and use them to activate machine parts which provide things like movement, shielding, and additional dice with which to activate more parts. Driving through terrain causes damage, and if a player's damage gauge ends up in the red at the end of the turn, they must lose parts from their invention. These will need to be replaced in the draft phase, constantly forcing players to discover new synergies. .

For Ages: 14+

WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs.

Such a fun and zany game, like starring in The Great Race movie. Educational too, as the player-characters are all famous inventors and there's a bit about each of them on the card. It takes a bit of thinking to figure out in the first round but when everyone is playing out their race moves the board gets quite exciting!

Steampunk Rally takes the fun of games like Galaxy Truckers and Jamaica and turns it into something that is true to the genre and feel of a steampunk racing games. Players take on the role of old-school inventors and scientists from the past and have the opportunity to race them against each other. The dirigible that gets the farthest across the finish line by the end of the game wins. From Boardgame Geek (since they summed up gameplay better than I would): "Each round starts with a card draft in which players carefully select machine parts to add to their invention and one-shot boost cards to aid them or hinder opponents. These will need to be replaced in the draft phase, constantly forcing players to discover new synergies." This game captures a spirit of creativity and strategy unlike any other racing board game I have played. I wanted to enjoy Galaxy Truckers and I did not because of the randomness of trying to pull truck parts as fast as possible. When I was new to that game, I felt like the choices I made were detrimental to what I would be able to accomplish, and thus make the game less fun for me. That is NOT a problem in Steampunk Rally--the card drafting and the options you have on whether or not to add that part to your construct make your choices less forced. Everything about the game is modular, and the fun-factor is stellar. The game looks daunting at first, but don't worry. There are lots of places to learn to play and see other people giving the game a shot. Roxley Games and Orin Bishop, you knocked this one out of the steampunk park!

Steampunk Rally is an incredible game with a very elegant design. The gameplay is unique and very engaging. I loved every seconds of every games I played so far!
