Printer received as a Christmas gift and we were super excited! It's our first experience with a 3-d printer so cannot speak to how this printer compares to others. Here's the rundown on our experience with this one: The quick version: In a nutshell, it does take some tinkering - we're still learning and we love it! A few quick notes: 1) calibrate the z axis 2) be sure the tape on the print bed is in good shape (or print jobs may stick to it), 3) get the STL converter to sketchup and have fun! The details: We unboxed the unit, installed the software, and printed out the heart pendant that was installed as a sample with the unit. We sat mesmerized as the printer warmed up and began printing. We were disappointed though not surprised that initially nothing came out. Other reviewers had given the "heads up" to calibrate the z axis, so we did just that and after a few tries we were again mesmerized as the printer printed the pendant layer by layer. So tip 1: calibrate the z axis. Apparently there's not a single setting that will work for everyone, so find the setting that works for you. With the pendant printed, we were eager to show off our first print job. But we hit another snag - the pendant was difficult to remove from the print bed. Apparently the initial uncalibrated runs scratched through the tape on the printer bed which made the pendent stick firmly to it. With some persistence with the supplied putty knife we removed the pendant and were back in business. We then replaced scratched up tape on the print bed with a new piece, also supplied with the printer. So tip 2: be sure the tape on the print bed is in good shape. Our first "real" print job was a phone case for an iphone 5. We found the template online among loads of other templates. It fit the iphone5 perfectly. A friend came over and asked us to print a case for his Samsung phone ... a little while later, we had one ready for him. Feeling bold, we attempted to etch his name into a second one but we had difficulty getting that to work. The issue wasn't the 3d printer but our novice understanding of sketchup, a program that can be used to make 3-d printable objects. If you download sketchup and the .STL file converter, you can print whatever object you make ... of course as long as it fits in the print bed dimensions. We've since made some personalized gifts that recipients have loved! Possibly the most rewarding things we've generated so far are brackets for LED lights. We had trouble getting lights to adhere under a floating shelf over a desk. We designed one on paper, then created it in sketchup, exported it to STL, opened it in the XYZ software, and 7 minutes later had our prototype bracket. After finding it a great fit we ran 3 jobs of 6 brackets each. So inside an hour we had defined the problem, created a concept first on paper and then in digital form, and had enough brackets to secure the lights. That entire process was quicker than a round trip to the local home improvement store! Amazing!

WARNING This printer will cost your thousands!!!!! I purchased my xyz davinci junior on black friday from barnes and noble for my students to use, it has the following issues. 1. Teeth inside metal feeder broke on left side on top of the spool, I thought it was an extruder issue so I purchased the smart extruder, ended up figuring the feed metal piece was bad and salvaged the old one. The metal piece broke again and fed meters of filament across my house. 2. My RFID chips are registering empty while spools are full due to long projects printing after fillament breaks or pops out of feeder. 3. When I auto calibrate it tells me to contact customer service. 4. The top of all projects are unfinished as if it stops 1mm short on the top. 5. My students are super upset that nothing can be printed. 6. Can You send me a better printer or please send me some of those metal feeder things with the teeth, they seem to break weekly. If not, I want a full refund and discount on better model that is reliable, if your company makes a reliable machine. Between the extruder and buying the filament to get the rfid chips, I have spent close to 1k on my students and this is ridiculous, I could have a makerbot or better companies machine.
