Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
Coming to us from the UK is this "Know Your Sports" series for serious beginning athletes. Unlike many such series, this book includes step-by-step instructions of specific moves and techniques, with accompanying photos (most modeled by proficient teen players in England). The book's first twelve two-page spreads introduce readers to the sport and its history, show a diagram of a 400m outdoor track, and discuss training and drug testing. Following spreads show sprint starts and stress the necessity for a powerful sprinting style, while two sections are devoted to clearing hurdles and mastering changeover skills in relay racing. Other chapters cover middle- and long-distance running, marathons, and world competitions such as the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games. Pages are spacious and neatly designed, while the text is succinct. Players and spectators alike will appreciate a sprinkling of color photos and information about track stars like Australian Cathy Freeman, Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie, and French runner Marie-Jose Perec. Especially interesting is an artist's impression of the 2012 Olympic stadium being built in East London. A final spread lists statistics on records and events as well as a glossary of running terms and some appropriate websites. This series could be helpful for individual runners or used as a supplement in a school sports program. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
