Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Janet Weber
The Titans are offering track and field for the first time and 14-year-old Sully, a natural-born runner, is so excited to sign-up that he volunteers his three best friends without their knowledge. When his hesitant friends discover they are signed up, Sully must convince them they should be on the team. His friends challenge him through their sports of football, basketball, and baseball before Sully outwits them and wins them over to stick with track. When the Rogers Twins (Sully's arch enemies) from a rival team appear at a track meet, Sully and his friends agree to challenge them that whoever's team wins the next track meet will have to shave their heads. Prior to the story, a pre-game show is presented with a ticker at the bottom of the first few pages and provides readers highlights of the main characters through the "Sports Zone Special Report" as if watching a sporting event on television. Hip and stylish art depict speed and action while not being overly detailed and keeps the plot moving. Sully's first person narration is highlighted in yellow text blocks to help readers differentiate from the white background speech bubbles. The book follows the premise of the other titles in the series in teaching valuable lessons of team spirit, fairness, and good sportsmanship. Concludes with a "Sports Zone" postgame recap and a postgame extra where readers can analyze the game with discussion questions and writing prompts, as well as an "Info Center" glossary. A good choice for reluctant readers. Part of the "Sports Illustrated Kids Graphic Novels" series. Reviewer: Janet Weber
