Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Naomi Milliner
Twelve-year-old Jared has spent his entire life in "Graveyard City," a place that has earned its nickname by the presence of four cemeteries. It has never bothered him—until he experiences a recurring nightmare in which two ghosts tie him up and drag him through the cemetery closest to his home. Then it gets worse. Jared sees the ghosts rob a grave, but he does not see where the body—or ghosts—go. At this point, Jared confides in best friend Stan and their fellow "Zombie Hunters," Mitch and Barry. During a sleepover at Jared's, the boys sneak out to the cemetery and, sure enough, they witness the same thing. The worst part of the frightening experience is that the ghosts threaten Jared in particular, causing the boys to contend with this riddle: how do you kill something already dead? This book (one of a series) is so tedious and repetitive that whatever suspense it might have generated has been pummeled out of early on. For example, between pages 65 and 83, Jared says he "has no idea" four times. He also repeatedly enters the cemetery at night, despite his fears that the ghosts will be there and, of course, they are! Each chapter opens with an entry from Jared's journal but, alas, these passages only reinterate what has already taken place. The simple black-and-white illustrations are also problematic. For example, if there are four cemeteries, why are only three of them on the map? You can easily purchase several better books for the price of this one. Reviewer: Naomi Milliner
