Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Jans has lived and taught school in the Alaskan bush for almost 20 years, writes an award-winning column in Alaska magazine and has previously authored two well-received books of Alaska essays, The Last Light Breaking and A Place Beyond. In addition to these impressive credentials, he is also an avid outdoorsman who has traveled over 50,000 wilderness miles. These stories certainly prove that Jans has a way of transporting the reader to modern-day Alaska, still a wilderness in some places while overrun with tourists and modern technology in others. Similar to John Haines's The Stars, the Snow, the Fire (LJ 6/1/89), this title successfully conveys the timelessness of living off the land and sustains a universal rather than a regional appeal. This is a painless way to learn about Alaska. Read a couple of essays each day, and you may find yourself booking passage north.--Kimberly Bateman, Broward Cty. Writings and photos from the author/photographer's twenty years in Alaska. Twenty-seven essays, each of which opens with a color photograph, cover a wide range of topics, including whether there are any untrammeled areas in the state, the lives of bush pilots and other photographers, hunting, photography, marriage, and various animals and their relation to the land.
