Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
When walking in the woods, they are all around us. We may not see them, hear them or know they are there, but if we look hard enough we can find them. What are they? They are animals and their signs. As a new addition to the "Young Naturalist Field Guides" series, Leslie Dendy and Linda Garrow have created a simple book full of facts, definitions and techniques for seeing and interpreting animal signs. Dendy begins the book explaining how to be safe in the woods. The three major sections--"The Forest," "The Field" and "The Pond." ar full of Garrow's colorful and detailed illustrations. Entries for animals, while informative can be somewhat inconsistent in their format. For example, Dendy writes about how the snake can sneak up on frogs, slithers and sheds its skin, but leaves out how snakes leave tracks, or create dens. While younger readers may not notice the differences, older readers will. This is still a good book for the younger ages and will get students started in a very interesting activity. 2000, Gareth Stevens Publishing, Ages 5 to 12, $21.27. Reviewer: John D.
