Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Truck enthusiasts of all ages will delight in the beautiful photographs by Steven Borns that take them under the hood, inside the cab, under the trailer, into the warehouse, and on the road for the long haul. From the very first page, the second person narrative puts the reader in the driver's seat. However, the picture book format is deceptive. The extensive use of technical jargon makes it a difficult read. In the section that deals with the tractor-trailer hook-up, the reader is asked to "Make sure fifth-wheel jaws are open. Back tractor as squarely as possible at the center of the trailer until fifth-wheel jaws engage the kingpin on the trailer. Check that the fifth-wheel jaws have closed completely around trailer kingpin. Make sure that no daylight shows between the fifth wheel and the trailer's deck plate. Perform a pull-test--to check the coupling." A glossary of terms and a guide to trucker lingo complement the text. 2000, Tricycle Press, Ages 7 to 12, $14.95. Reviewer: Ellen R. Braaf

Gr 2-4-With close-up color photos and brief, technical directions, this book encourages readers to take the driver's seat. Every page has instructions on how to check under the hood, hook up the tractor and trailer, shift gears, load cargo, complete a "vehicle inspection report," and more. Large pictures of the inside and outside of a tractor-trailer truck dominate each page, but the minimal text that accompanies most of the pictures leaves many questions unanswered. Inquisitive readers will want to know what shock absorbers or ratchet binders do as they read about them. The mentions of "satellite paging" and of "citizens band (CB) radio" demand the kind of detailed explanation that is included in the section on sleeping in the truck. A glossary and a page of "Trucker Talk" don't make up for this lack of clarification. While the title promises that this is "A Powerful Truck Book," it does not convey the sense of size and strength of its subject that Seymour Simon's Book of Trucks (HarperCollins, 2000) does.-Edith Ching, St. Albans School, Mt.
