Overview

Our world is getting smaller. Improvements in communications systems, transportation, and information highways mean that countries are connected to each other in an increasing number of ways-politically, economically, culturally, and environmentally. The Global Village investigates the effects of globalization on key international issues-for individuals, companies, and governments. Are traditional skills, cultures, and systems being lost in the interests of worldwide trade and economic progress? Can a balance be achieved between the expansion of global activities and preserving the interests of individual countries? Most importantly, what action is being taken to address these issues, and whose responsibility is it to ensure that globalization is controlled and managed in the best interests of all concerned?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Oliver
This volume from "The Global Village" series presents a focused and detailed look at the global effects of international trade. A short introductory chapter defines trade and the global connections it can create. The following two chapters provide a more detailed explanation of the history and expansion of international trade. The chapter titled "Winners and Losers" provides information about how global trade can have positive and negative impacts on local economies and cultures. The final chapter discusses attempts to make world trade more equitable and prevent abuse of workers in less well-developed countries. Each topic is very thoroughly discussed. This book includes high-quality photographs, "Focus On" questions for thought or essay, "Eyewitness" boxes that quote local citizens, and questions for debate or discussion. Numerous charts and graphs help readers understand and analyze relevant data. This title is reminiscent of a textbook and won't be used for light informational reading. However, as a resource for projects and papers, it would be an excellent addition to public or high school libraries. Contains a table of contents, a list of suggested books, a list of web sites, a glossary, an index, and details about teaching resources for further information. Reviewer: Sharon Oliver
