Great game. The gameplay is totally strategy based. You can perform missions for the Governor or simply trade. Governor's rewards are sometimes some nice items. Trade prices are dynamic, but I don't know if its based on the trading you've already done, or just the time of year. I'm suspecting the latter, which means you can really clean up if you find a good trade route.
Ship/Port battle gameplay isn't twitch based. You select the current target, and your cannons fire as fast as they can, or you may choose from a range of special weapon to launch at particullarly tough foes.
I highly recommend it. Although not a similar game, its a must have gem, just like Angry Birds was.
P.S. I would have given it five stars, but I can't edit the four stars I gave it earlier for initially launching without a workable icon.

This game is very similar to a game I played in the dim and distant past on the Tandy Model III called Taipan. I spent many hours in the college computer labs playing Taipan rather than attending lectures. I am now reliving my youth and have just spent nearly 14 hours straight playing Tradewinds 2. It's games like this that make you wish the battery life on the NookColor was longer. I recommend it although you'd better be near a wall socket as you'll want to keep playing for far longer than your battery will last.

At first I was unsure about buying this game because of the price, and it took me forever to finally purchase it. I am so glad that I did go ahead and buy it. This game is like a Story. It has no action, is not like an arcade game, and is solo role playing. Basically, you go from port to port doing tasks for people and earning money. You can purchase items from one location and try to sell it for more money at a different location. You use the money to upgrade storage, ship, and buy weapons to keep pirates away. The most action is tapping on a pirate ship and hoping you bought enough weapons to sink it. When you sink, game is over and you start at your last save point. This game involves a lot of reading and strategy. It is like Chocolatier on the PC and Nintendo DS, and sort of like Oregon Trails. Love it!

Good game, but like others have said, its hard. This is how i beat it. Choose the first or second charecter and just save in EVERY port. EVERY ONE, EVERY TIME YOU DOCK. And do tasks for one govenor at a time and do his tasks first until he runs out of tasks and you can move on to the next govenor. And dont use the man of war ship because it costs so much to repair.

Updating my previous review. This is still a 5 star rating. The last assignment for my first character was very difficult. It took over one "year", but I thought through a strategy and got 'er done. I am now on my second character with new ports to discover and defend. Now that I have experience, I look forward to the new assignments and trying different scenarios. No, I do not believe that a young child would enjoy this game.

Beat the game as the third main charecter(iganchi somethimg like that) now playing russel van gegor or whatever but anyways this game is a great game definitly worth five dollars though i think playing as the main charecters is better than creating your own but thats just my opinion.
Here are a few quick tips:
Always check your task box to see where to go.
Renew contracts for people like mr bubboes and prinncess aindraine to really get full affect for fighting
Buy lots of chain and fire and keep sox tiki bombs so when you attack enemy taken ports or fleets of man o war ships your ready
When you have fake amulets or people that drive you into storms, sail to a different location to try to get to where you realy wanna go
These tips helped me they may not help you but its ok you will really love this game as much as i do.

I really fell in love with this game. The challenge can be noth fun and exasperating, but always enjoyable. Requires a bit of memory juggling as you progress, since certain ports don't take the same goods all the time. Nothing more frustrating than losing all your cargo because you forgot that a particular port doesn't allow a certain item. Very fun! I highly recommend it.

This is the only rpg game that ive played on nook and was somewhat impressed. You have missions, get upgrades, and are free to go as you please in the game. Wish there were more like this on nook.

Getting to pick which gender and headshot goes a long way for me. There is no set timeframe to do errands. Choosing what you carry and to where gives freedom to ,in a way, be your own boss. Freetrade mode there's no access to the govenors. I do wish that i could purchase warehouse space in any port i choose while in freetrade.

Amusing dialouge. Perhaps a bit too easy to win but i find it relaxing and fun. Probably one of the best offically released nook games so far.
