Based on findings from a sample of nearly 1,100 Puerto Ricans living in the New York area, this book posits that adhering to traditional cultural values (for example, the family) has the socially desirable consequence of discouraging such deviant behaviors as substance abuse. The authors conclude that promoting specific values will not prevent certain individual and social ills; rather, promoting a ‘sense of tradition' itself is needed.

Basing their conclusions on a specifically designed stratified area probability sample of 1,084 interviews with Puerto Ricans in the New York City area, Cuadado (U. of South Florida-Sarasota) and Leiberman (John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York) argue that adherence to a more traditionalist view of one's culture has the socially desired consequences of inhibiting the emergence of deviant behaviors such as the abuse of alcohol and other substances.
