Meet the Author

Virgil Elliott is a world-respected painter and writer. He is included in the Art Renewal Center’s Gallery of Living Masters and one of only twenty-four artists worldwide with certification from the American Portrait Society. A Signature Member of the American Society of Portrait Artists and the Society of Western Artists, and the chairman of the ASTM International Task Group on Artists’ Pastels, he lives in Pennegrove, California.

    Very good guide to different techniques

    This book contains excellent information on an astonishingly wide variety of techniques.
    I have had it only a couple of months and already am consulting it regularly. Which
    leads to its major fault. Finding specific things again is difficult and the index is no
    help. I have had to mark all of the pages to which I wish to refer.

    The charts of the characteristics of various paints are especially helpful, as are the old
    master reproductions used as examples. Mr. Elliott can paint well himself, which gives
    weight to his instruction.

    Intelligently written, well researched, logically constructed. I liked this book for the practical procedures and techniques presented therein, for the intresting passages about the history behind the techniques, and for the thought provoking, philosophical suggestions concerning the necessity for quality in creating paintings and in art in general. I have confidence in the information presented in this book. If one wants to learn how to create masterful paintings which will last hundreds of years, I suggest that this book is a good place to start. Mr. Elliott has also included a bibliography, many of the selections of which can be obtained through Barnes and Noble.

    This is a wonderful, incredibly helpful book.

    I have been taking portrait painting lessons from various teachers who have taught various methods. This book covers them all and then some
    plus is extremely easy to read. I use it all the time.
