Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Eight small stuffed animals come to life in fast moving rhythmic and rhyming verse. Mouse, bear, toad, goose, pig and three small dogs find toy cars and trucks left in a shopping bag on a little boy's bedroom floor. The doggie trio gears up to keep make believe roads in the bedroom safe and orderly. With helmets fastened and silver badges shining, they travel in two motorcycles (one with a sidecar)—the canine patrol. Meanwhile, their stuffed friends travel the roads in a toy car, scooter, tow truck and jeep. Toad and rabbit are caught drag racing and with sirens blaring, are pulled over and issued a traffic ticket. Goose runs a red light on his scooter and while pulled off the road, the traffic pups are called to a highway wreck. Finally, the roadway is cleared of accidents and the drivers line up to be led back to the station by the traffic pups, of course. When the little boy returns to his bedroom, the toy cars and trucks are neatly parked around the bedroom with the stuffed animals seated in straight lines on the bed and toy chest. Hmmm. A delightful and lively story, one with lots of action and adventure that is sure to delight young listeners and readers. Preschoolers will have fun with the words and engaging language. Silly sounds will delight toddlers and young preschoolers. Vocabulary development is key to helping children get ready to read and this story introduces specific names for many objects and actions. Simple rhyming text with few words on a page make it a good choice for read-aloud or storytimes. The illustrations are softly hued oils on cotton canvas with simple lines and warm colors. A few follow-up story extensions can be found on the author's website (michellemeadows.com). Enjoy this one. Reviewer: Suzanne Javid

PreS-K—A lively follow-up to Pilot Pups (S & S, 2008). Leaving from a shopping bag left on a bedroom floor, eight stuffed animals travel a town of blocks via toy car, scooter, tow truck, jeep, and motorcycle with sidecar. The traffic-pup cops ticket a drag-racing mouse and frog, catch a red-light-running goose, and assist at a minor highway crash of toys. Finally, it's time to resume original positions, but since the playthings have gone from being scattered across the floor to being perfectly aligned by type, the young owner's puzzled look ends the story—to readers' insider's glee. Meadows's rhymes offer plenty of energy for this tale of motion, and Andreasen's double-page oils have clean lines and block compositions. The eventful scenes will work well for groups, so tell children to "Fasten helmets./Rev it up," because they'll enjoy this ride.—Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA
Kirkus Reviews

A menagerie of small stuffed animals comes to life in a little boy's room, with three diminutive dogs turning into traffic police officers on motorcycles.

Other little animals drive cars around the room, illustrating common traffic mishaps. The canine cops patrol pretend roadways around the bedroom, giving out traffic tickets to a speeding mouse and toad, cautioning a goose who runs a red light and sorting out a collision between a bear and a pig. The short, punchy text written in rhyming couplets uses just a few words per page to describe the traffic flow, with lots of action words and concluding exclamation marks revving up the plot. The illustrations, in oil paint on cotton canvas, have a dreamy quality, with muted hues and a mottled effect in the solid backgrounds. Though this complements the imaginary nature of the premise, it's an odd contrast with the pithiness of the text, which calls out for vibrant primary colors. In a clever conclusion, the final page shows the toy vehicles parked on the floor around the bed, with the animals seated in rows with innocent faces. The little boy who owns the toys wears a puzzled expression—he'd left the cars in a shopping bag in the story's opening illustration.

Preschoolers who like to act out imaginary dramas with toy cars and trucks will enjoy these petite pretend police dogs. (Picture book. 3-5)
