Meet the Author

J. A. Huss likes to write new adult books that make you think and keep you guessing. Her favorite genre to read is space opera, but since practically no one reads those books, she writes new adult science fiction, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, urban fantasy, and books about Junco (who refuses to be saddled with a label).

She has an undergraduate degree in horses, (yes, reallyThank you, Colorado State University) and a masters degree in forensic toxicology from the University of Florida. She used to have a job driving around Colorado doing pretty much nothing but shooting the breeze with farmers, but now she just writes, runs the New Adult Addiction and Clean Teen Reads Book Blogs, and runs an online science classroom for homeschoolers.

To be honest I wasn't sure what I was getting when I picked this book up. I've been a fan of Huss for a while, but only recently have I started reading and enjoying the NA contemporary romance books. So I'd had this on my kindle for MONTHS before I decided to bite the bullet and dive right in. And at first I was a little disappointed. BUT - you see that rating right there? Yeah, 5 stars, so don't worry. I just found the premise of how Rook found the studio and decided to go there a little too cheesy for me. But, twist of fate, knee-jerk decision, and here we are ... It is obvious from the get go that Rook has not had an easy life. And the more you learn, the more you are - or at least I was - amazed that she has made it as far as she has without serious mental issues. Don't get me wrong, she has mental issues, but for what she has been through she is decently well adjusted. Kind of. Ok maybe she reminds me of a nervous young horse, where the slightest provocation will make her run. Until she meets Ronin. Male model Ronin. YUM. I'll take a Ronin with a side of naked please. Sorry, what were we talking about ... oh yes. Rook meets Ronin, and things turn around for her. Well technically it isn't him, but his sister and her boyfriend that take that first chance, but DETAILS. I have been very fortunate in my life, and have never had to deal with anything Rook has been through. But Huss does an amazing job bringing all that horrible-ness to light, but at the same time keeping it serious and dark. I don't know how she does it. But I was able to empathize right there with Rook. Ronin has an interesting past that I hope we get to see more of - ok, I have to be honest here. I power read this whole trilogy before writing this review. I couldn't put them down! So I KNOW if we get to see more of Ronin's past ... and I won't tell! :-) But if you like your romance flavored with a touch of darkness, you will love Tragic. Trust me.

Heck YES! Couldn't put it down! The writing draws you in from the very being. Love Ronin! So...love Ronin. Duel POV, interesting plot, and did I mention HOT Ronin? Definitely recommend. This is book #1 of a trilogy but, all three books are available, MANIC #2, and PANIC #3. S.A.K.

This book is different from anything I've ever read. I've got mixed feelings on so much of what is going on with Rook and Ronin that I find myself confused. This is one of those books that will give you a book hangover because it won't leave your brain... the story is so intense and full of... everything that you just can't let it go. That's me. Book hangover time. Luckily Manic is waiting for me on my Kindle so maybe the hangover will only be a beer hangover and not a tequila hangover

Overall Rating: 4.5 Stars – Kept telling myself “just one more chapter.” First thing I have to mention, Tragic is written in duel points of view! We get more chapters with Rook, but there is a heavy amount of Ronin in there too. When I first started reading I was quite sure that both main characters were crazy. Especially Rook. I wasn’t so sure about her character or the story in general, in fact I was quite sure I was going to hate this book for the first 20% or something. Thankfully, I kept reading because that was not the case. Hey, I’m a girl that can admit when she was wrong. Tragic is a bit tragic, but it’s also a lot funny. For not being sure if I would like Ronin in the beginning, I found myself fully falling for him eventually. The interactions between Rook and Ronin were just so funny and I loved being in Ronin’s head. Ronin was just so sweet and by quite early in the book he was head over heels for Rook, he just didn’t know it yet. I found that so enduring and cute. I’ve already said that for the first few percent I didn’t think I would like this book and I think some of that was because I just had no clue what was going on. It’s obvious that something “sketchy” is happening around Rook, but she doesn’t ask many questions even if I was yelling at her that she needed to. I mean, ladies, at one point I was questioning whether or not Ronin was a pimp. For a while there he kind of puts off the pimp vibe. Once we finally find out what was happening half of me thought it wasn’t that bad. I was happy that it wasn’t a pimp situation, but a portion of me was horrified. I think I should have seen it coming, but I just didn’t. I did not see that and I wasn’t sure how far things were going to go. It was obvious Rook and Ronin were going to have some bumps in their relationship, especially once we were told what was going on. I just loved the way that this couple kind of fell into their relationship, it was such an easy transition, even if the stuff that came after wasn’t always. I did find it a little weird how everyone around Ronin just seems to know that he’s in love with Rook and they all accept it. It was nice, but also a bit too easy as well. There love is rather instant. Three days in and it seems as thought Ronin is already all in at that point. Ronin definitely wasn’t that scared guy who runs from his feelings. Normally I wouldn’t like this and I’d be complaining about it during a review, but I don’t know for some reason in Tragic it just worked for me. I wanted Ronin to be sweet, accepting, and totally for this relationship. I read a lot, but somehow I’ve never read something like this. The story line was unique, at least to me and it sucked me in. I couldn’t put this book down and I had to start the next one immediately. If you’re looking for a story that isn’t like so many out there I highly recommend this series, starting with Tragic.

All right I just need a minute here to grab my bearings because this series just consumed my life for the past week and I need a minute to come down. Holy fucking shit balls of fire were these books good! No. Not good. Fan-fucking-tastic. Yes that's what they were. I got suggested the Rook and Ronin series by a friend in one of my book groups on Facebook after having just come off of a great book roll that I wanted to keep going. So, I hopped on trusty Goodreads and checked out TRAGIC. Deciding it sounded pretty good I took the plunge. I can honestly say when I made the choice to buy it I had no idea it was going to quickly become one of my favorite reads ever. The books start with the story of Rook (duh it's her series) a girl down on her luck who finally catches a break as an erotic model. I know what you're thinking, an erotic model? Yeah! And it's hella awesome. She falls head over heels in love with, yup you guessed it, Ronin her modeling partner. Ronin naturally comes with his own baggage. Ronin's baggage comes in the form of friends, Ford and Spencer, we meet throughout the series and become as much a part of the story as these two do. What JA Huss does with this series is weave this insane storyline over a 7 book arc. But what makes it so brilliant is that each new book plays off the last and feeds onto the next. And unlike other series, no one book drags or makes you ever go, yeah could have done without that. It really is one of the best series I have ever read because each book is well written and developed and serves a purpose to the overall series. Nothing is written just to be filler or fluff. Let's talk about the cast of characters. I've already mentioned Rook and Ronin. Rook is one of those women you want to read about. Hell, she's one you want to befriend. She's strong, smart, funny, and beautiful. We need more women like her in our books. And the guys. God damn. Ronin, Ford, and Spencer are a little bit of something for everyone. Love the pretty boy? Ronin's your guy. Love brains behind that gorgeous smile? Then Ford will be more than happy to play slap ass with you. Want the tough sexy biker with a heart of gold (why yes mam I do)? Then hop on the back of Spencer's bike. These books were a totally unexpected surprise and have made me fan of Huss. I've now found my new series to champion the next time my friends ask me what they should read next. I know I myself can't wait to consumer more of her books.

This book rocked. Story was believable not over the top. Loved Rook she doesn't whine she dusts herself off and then plows forward. Sexy but not plain smutt

Stumbled upon this book awhile ago and added it to my reading list. After finishing it in a day I'm sorry I waited! From the get go the chemistry between Rook and Ronin is an attention grabber. But what I really love in that Rook is her own heroine, believing in herself and sticking up for what is important to her whether it means independence, love or both.

Very interesting look inside the photography world. Ronin is in charge of the models at a photography studio he is a partner in. Rook along with dumb luck finds herself there becoming the focus of everyone she encounters, much to Ronin's dismay. I definitely recommend this book.

Better than I anticipated. A little repetive run ons with rook but overall I couldn't put it down. That's what we want from a book right? Nicely done
