Meet the Author

After years of working in the aerospace industry, my fascination with stories and people's lives led me to study writing. I have a deep respect for how well-crafted writing can both convey a message and hold the reader's interest. The stories I write encompass large themes by bringing them down to the personal level. The people in my stories struggle with the triumphs and failings over their position in life. They face decisions, chances and fates that force them into reactions and hard choices. Putting a story together, whether written, spoken or sung is not a random act; it requires attention to both content and presentation. My hope is that readers will read not only for entertainment, but also to learn and ask further questions.

    Very Good Read!

The fact that the time line was during prohibition makes for an interesting read. It was colorful with some very interesting characters. It was a fast read and one of those books you can't put down. It was not a typical gangster type of book such as others out there, not a lot of blood and gore and no where near the current 'Empire Boardwalk' on HBO. But it was entertaining and I would recommend it.

    Enjoyable

This book was listed as being 577 pages long, of these about 560 are story, which is nice, because some books have thirty or more pages, unrelated to the storyline, included in the page count. The editing was poor. The plot, langauge and descriptions put me in the middle of an old gangster movie. The story was that believable. The hero, poor guy was a scape goat. A real hard luck joe. I enjoyed this book. Not enough to archive it for a future rereading, but for a one time read, it suited me just fine. I think male readers would enjoy it much more then female and it is an adult read.

Would make a good gangster movie

The story held my interest because I do like to read about the prohibition era and depression years. It certainly was a different way of life then and I really felt sorry for the main character who couldn't seem to get a break, but somehow made his way through it all. Certainly held my interest.

    Well Written

I like the author's writing style. He tells a good story without a lot of description about the scenery, what people are wearing, etc. Mostly conversation and not a lot of metaphors. It was refreshing to read about a different era.

    Another Good read.

I think it all goes to prove that we all have different tastes and, for my money, Howard is a fine writer. I will look for other books by David George Howard.

I loved this book! When I purchased this book I didn't know it

I loved this book! When I purchased this book I didn't know it took place in Providence. It was great to have places in Rhode Island mentioned. It was like a 1940's movie like someone else mentioned and the ending was perfect.

Pretty good for a discount book

I liked the book, got an attitude with some of the parts and how the main character was mistreated...It all was justified at the end. He got some bad breaks. The story flow was very good, moved very smooth. I was`hoping he would find some real romance in the end.

    A well told story.

The style was straight forward and the characters were well developed. The plot was intricate, with many intertwined sub-plots. He also did a good job using prohibition and the early depression as a backdrop.

All in all, a very good book that I would highly recommend.
