Meet the Author

Lee E. Brown, EdD, CSCS*D, FACSM, is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and a previous member of the NSCA board of directors. He is also a certified health fitness instructor through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and a certified club coach by USA Weightlifting (USAW). In 2003 Brown received the NSCA Outstanding Young Investigator award for his research on high-velocity exercise.

Brown holds both a master's degree in exercise science and a doctorate in educational leadership from Florida Atlantic University. Brown is now an associate professor of kinesiology in the department of kinesiology at California State University at Fullerton. He resides in Buena Park, California.

Vance A. Ferrigno is the director of fitness and aquatics at Woodfield Country Club in Boca Raton, Florida. In addition, he has been a strength and conditioning consultant to professional and amateur athletes since 1990. He is certified through ACSM as a health fitness instructor (HFI) as well as a health fitness director. He is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the NSCA and a USAWF club coach. Ferrigno, who earned his bachelor's degree in exercise science from Florida State University, assists in developing and teaching the curriculum for a strength and conditioning course at Florida Atlantic University. He resides in Coconut Creek, Florida.

ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS
John Graham, MS, CS, CS*D, is the vice president of rehabilitation and human performance at Orthopaedic Associates of Allentown (Pennsylvania). Graham is currently a column editor for the NSCA's Strength & Conditioning Journal. Graham holds a master of science degree in health and physical education from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.

Andrew Hardyk, PhD, is the assistant track coach at Penn State University and has been on the Nittany Lion staff since 1995. He coaches the long, high, and triple jumpers, sprinters, and hurdlers. Hardyk received his bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering in 1992 and a master's degree in engineering mechanics the following year from the University of Cincinnati. In 2000 he received his PhD in sports biomechanics from Penn State University.

Doug Lentz, CSCS*D, is the director of fitness and wellness for Chambersburg Health Services in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He received his BS degree from Penn State University. Lentz serves as the volunteer strength and conditioning coach for the Penn State women's tennis team and assists the Shippensburg University sprinters and middle-distance runners in their strength and power training. He is currently the conference and special projects coordinator for the NSCA.

Joshua Miller, MS, earned his master of science degree in exercise physiology at Florida Atlantic University (FAU). Miller is currently employed as the assistant director of clinical services with Metabolic Testing Services, LLC, based in Atlanta, Georgia.

Daniel Murray is a physical therapist who specializes in the treatment of orthopedic and sports-related disorders. He holds a master of science degree in kinesiology from California State University at Fullerton.

Steven Plisk, MS, CSCS*D, is the sports performance director at Velocity Sports Performance in Fairfield County, Connecticut. He received his bachelor of science degree in sport and exercise science from the State University of New York at Buffalo and his master of science in kinesiology from the University of Colorado. He is currently an associate editor for the Strength & Conditioning Journal. Plisk is also a chapter author for the National Strength and Conditioning Association's (NSCA) Essentials of Strength Training & Conditioning.

Jim Roberts, MS, CSCS, lectures extensively on functional training and human performance. He holds a master of science degree in exercise physiology from Florida Atlantic University and a bachelor of science in health and fitness from Baylor University.

Diane Vives is the president of Vives Training Systems, a sports training and fitness company based in Austin, Texas. Vives holds a bachelor's degree in exercise science and wellness from Florida Atlantic University.

    Great Drill Book

    If you're looking for drills to improve you or your athletes speed, agility, or quickness- look no further. <BR/><BR/>The book starts out with a short chapter on preparing for the drills followed by another short chapter on "needs analysis" (which shows you how to evaluate the need for a speed, agility, and quickness program). <BR/><BR/>The rest of the book from there is the "meat" of the book: three sections of drills, one for speed, one for agility, and one for quickness. Each of these sections is loaded with great pictures of the drills along with the purpose of the drill and an explanation of how to do it. <BR/><BR/>The book ends with a 6th Chapter on sport-specific programs. Here the reader is given routines for all the different sports such as volleyball, karate, baseball, etc. <BR/><BR/>All-in-all I found this to be a very nice resource for drills- drills for really just about any sport. To boot, the size of the book is such that you can toss it in a gym bag and take it with you. Other sports resources I liked include The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution if you suffer from plantar fasciitis. Happy training!
