Great Book but a little cumbersome to use

I have done three Olympic distance triathlons and am training for my first half ironman. This book does a good job of covering all aspects of triathlon training for all distances. From experience the Olympic plan is solid. Gale does a great job of paring the plans down to what a normal human with a job and kids can handle.

The only negative aspect of the book is that the training plans contain codes embedded in the plan and the translation for the code is in another chapter. For example Running S1= pickups, S2=strides, etc. I have gotten around this by copying the four pages of codes and utilizing them as I go through the plan. It would have been better if the publisher had the codes fold out of the book so that you could refer to them while going through the plan.

Excellent for new and intermediate triathlon/multisports athletes

Excellent book. Very accessible and easy to read even to a newcomer to triathlon/multisport training as I am. Accessible does not mean vague or squishy prose. It is all practical, well-written stuff. Combines a great mix of specific training plans for all levels of experience with narrative discussion that is enjoyable reading but always sticks to the point: giving you useful info. This lean, direct approach in the writing also indirectly serves to be inspirational. Made me want to get out there and get busy and apply what I was reading.

    From the author

When I began to train for my first triathlon, I searched all the bookstores for a text that contained a plan. I had roughly six weeks to get ready for my first race and I wanted a guide for the preparation. What I found were books explaining the sport, what equipment was necessary, how to find equipment, the physiology of endurance training and lots of sample weeks or sample workouts. No, I wanted a plan¿the whole enchilada¿what should I be doing every, between the start of training and race day. And for how long? How fast? I was busy, so what was the minimum training necessary? What I wanted, a detailed plan¿not just sample training days¿was not available. If you are searching for a book with training plans, you are in the right place. This tome contains fourteen plans to guide the training of multisport athletes, novice to expert. Each plan details specific workouts, workout time and an organizational format. Some athletes will use the plans as they are, verbatim. For others, the plans may need small changes to fit personal needs. The ability to see each plan in it's entirety, the knowledge of your personal schedule and the knowledge of personal fitness allows you to make calculated modifications to any of the plans. And there are plenty of plans to chose from, fourteen total. Best wishes for your training and racing! Gale Bernhardt, author
