Trance Planet Box Set

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
The first four of DJ Tom Schnabel's fine Trance Planet compilations can all be found here, assembled by Triloka Records in a handsome leatherette box set. What makes this series unique is Schnabel's excellent taste in world music and the thoughtful sequencing; he has an uncanny ear for linking pieces that are, in and of themselves, heady mixtures of cultural influences. Whether it's a mellow instrumental drone, a Hindu devotional, or just a cycle of hypnotic rhythms, the operative word here is indeed "Trance," followed closely by "variety." The treasure chest includes cuts by chanteuse Cesaria Evora from the Cape Verde Islands, legends such as the late, great Sufi ...

Whether it's a mellow instrumental drone, a Hindu devotional, or just a cycle of hypnotic rhythms, the operative word here is indeed "Trance," followed closely by "variety." The treasure chest includes cuts by chanteuse Cesaria Evora from the Cape Verde Islands, legends such as the late, great Sufi singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and sarod master Ali Akbar Khan, and a group of Benedictine monks from Senegal, who sing Gregorian plainsong with log drum percussion. Thunderous church bells follow Sheila Chandra's stirring intro chant on Gol's bold, brusque "Angelica in Delirium"; ambient drum and bass grooves cast a dreamy spell, accented with a Middle Eastern prayer. The most gripping piece is surely the "Call to Prayer"; a 115-piece orchestra from Bosnia-Herzegovina paints a suspenseful drone background to a hauntingly sung Muslim invocation. The fact that the ensemble was victimized by bombings during the Bosnian war adds a special poignancy to the recording. In a similar vein, Mercedes Sosa's "Gracias a la Vida" carries gut-wrenching significance; the recording comes from the diva's triumphant, electrifying homecoming concert that marked her return to Argentina after many years in exile. The volcanic eruption of the cheering crowd ends the set, leaving the listener in awed silence. An extraordinary collection for both the world-savvy and the curious greenhorn alike.
All Music Guide - Steve Huey
The Trance Planet Box Set repackages the first four volumes in the Trance Planet series as a four-disc box set. While the sound quality and track listings haven't been altered, it's a handy way to acquire all the recordings at once. The emphasis here is not on the electronic dance style known as trance, but rather on various forms of world music aimed at creating trance-like, meditative states in their listeners. It's a fascinating study in comparing and contrasting different -- yet similar -- musical approaches from around the world.
