Trance Planet, Vol. 5

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
World music DJ and producer Tom Schnabel returns with a fifth installment in his Trance Planet series the first four of which are available as a boxed set, this time featuring mostly female voices. Schnabel does a masterful job of assembling a dozen trancey tracks from as wide a range of places as Morocco, Italy, Ireland, the Middle East, France, and Sardinia, as well as from London's Asian Underground scene and other hotbeds of international fusion. Asian Underground auteur Talvin Singh starts off the album with the high energy "Jaan," combining sultry Indian chant samples with a serpentine electronic drone and rapid-fire rhythmic grooves.
Graeme Revell's "Don't Go Back to Sleep" features the ecstatic devotional singing of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan -- there's enough trance here alone for an entire album, but there's more! John Wubberhorst's "No Mind" brings the album to a peaceful plateau with his serene bansuri flute. The deliciously long "Song of the Waterfall" by Africa's Tunde Jegede combines sparkling harp glissandi with a cello lamentation. Third Planet's hypnotic "Baaran" cranks up the energy again with their invigorating combination of electro-grooves and instruments from India, Italy, Algeria, and Kurdistan. Ireland's Aoife Ni Fhearraigh starts a parade of female voices with an ethereal track from her album Aoife. Other spellbinding chanteuses include Marta Sebestyen from Hungary, Elena Ledda from Sardinia, Morocco's Amina Alaoui, M Path's Mala Ganguli, and the spoken vocals of Italian astrophysicist Dr. Fiorella Terenzi. Whether you explore the musical complexities of the cultures presented here or simply let yourself trance out, this album should remain intriguing through many playings.
All Music Guide - Steve Huey
The fifth volume in the Trance Planet series finds compiler Tom Schnabel continuing to look for common threads between concepts of trance music in different cultures. While this series is devoted to world music, not the techno style known as trance, there are a few electronic sounds here; most of the modern sensibility, however, comes from the artists' willingness to mix and match from a far-ranging palette of ethnic styles. The overall concept isn't as illuminating as it was on earlier volumes, but Trance Planet, Vol. 5 is still a strongly eclectic collection when taken on its own terms.
