Read an Excerpt

Transcription Skills for Business, Sixth Edition, incorporates the following features:

  • Format for use as either a semester or nine-week course
  • Additional student progress forms
  • Expanded grammar, punctuation, and proofreading exercises
  • Incorporation of new features in The Office Guide
  • A supplemental tape with 25 dictated documents for additional practice or grading
  • Language arts tapes from previous editions to assist students in reinforcing acquisition of language arts skills

The lesson and dictation material for the 16 lessons (60 documents) covering a wide variety of business communications has been revised and updated. In the first eight lessons, students are given considerable assistance in transcribing through the inclusion of large chunks of the dictation in the transcription preview exercises. In later lessons, office style dictation is given where the dictator makes changes. The office style dictation has been expanded in the sixth edition of the text.

This sixth edition contains an overview of the transcription process: listening, keyboarding, using the transcriber, and proofreading. Each lesson contains the following:

  • Ten or more confusing words with-exercises
  • Presentation of several grammar and punctuation rules with exercises requiring application of these language skills
  • An integration of word usage, grammar, and punctuation rules presented in the lessons with the dictation students transcribe
  • Vocabulary transcription previews that include mainstream words as well as technical and business terms
  • Proofreading exercises that incorporate the word usage, grammar, punctuation, and formatting rules presented in the lesson

After every four lessons, a transcription test and a written test covering word usage, grammar, punctuation, and proofreading are given.

The sections on confusing words, grammar, and punctuation, spelling of difficult international cities, abbreviations, and word usage have been expanded in the supplemental reference text, The Office Guide. A section on time zones has also been added, and the index has been revised and expanded to make it easier to find information in The Office Guide.

The main revision for this edition centers around the transition from analog to digital transcription. Information has been included on the expanding trend of transcription being done at home. Many virtual assistants and transcriptionists work from home transcribing voice files that have been downloaded over the Internet.
