Overview

Now in its Fourth Edition, this transcultural nursing text conveys the importance of diverse cultural knowledge for the evaluation of patient outcomes, understanding persons in clinical settings and appropriate responses to clinical situations during the nurse/client interaction. Detailed theory is discussed and each chapter contains awareness exercises to ensure comprehension of the nursing role as trusted health care providers. Coverage includes cultural variation in lifestyle, communication and beliefs. New to this edition is a two-color design; revised content on assessment and applications of concepts; a new chapter on culturally appropriate interventions; and, more case studies, research studies and clinical vignettes.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Jayalakshmi Jambunathan
This book emphasizes providing culturally congruent nursing care across the life span in clinical and community contexts using the concepts of culture, health, and nursing. The purpose, as indicated by the editors, is to contribute to the development of theoretically based transcultural nursing and the advancement of transcultural nursing practice. It is written for nurses and undergraduate nursing students and other healthcare professionals. The contributors are credible authorities on the subject of transcultural nursing care. Chapters include review questions and learning activities to promote critical thinking. Case studies based on contributors' clinical experiences and research findings are presented to assist with conceptual linkages and to illustrate how concepts are applied in healthcare settings. Tables and boxes with research applications provide good illustrations of chapter content. This book will be very useful for teaching undergraduate nursing students. It will also benefit healthcare professionals from other disciplines by educating them about providing culturally congruent care from a developmental framework. The emphasis of clinical application through the integration of current research throughout the text is very informative. This reviewer would definitely recommend purchase by nursing students, libraries, and other healthcare professionals.
